I would suggest getting the matching nightstands, and non-matching dresser in a wood that is the same color and leg as the bed.

You're on the right track -- definitely no matchy-matchy! I do think it gives a nice symmetry and balance when bedside chests match each other, however. In my last bedroom, I had 2 demilune chests as nightstands and a large, shallow armoire that held all of my folding clothes. They weren't part of a set, but they were all about the same wood tone as the wood on your bed, and they shared similar, simple lines within classic forms. I can picture all 3 of these pieces as being perfect for your room. (Incidentally, I'm not using them in my new house and haven't sold them yet. Hi Myla, Welcome to DC, I think you will enjoy it here!
For your bedroom, there are many directions to go, however, your bed is compatible with many styles. Classical is obvious and modern is as well. My theory is to mix. Find pieces that you love within just a few parameters: scale, color style. Sounds easy, right! I like to keep the bedside tables/chests level with the mattress. While I love the demilunes above and they are great for color and style, they seem a bit to large in scale for the bed (and maybe the dimensions of the bed wall too. Do you have that measurement?) But that direction is good. You could also go with a modern style given the straight lines of the bed. Try to find ones that are large enough to fit the objects that you want there, ie: lamp, clock/ipod docking station, book, carafe, etc. Drawers are almost always a good thing. But keep the height closer to the mattress height.
In general, keep the colors varied to ward off the matchy-ness but nothing that clashes. The color that comes to mind for not matching is teak, as in mid-century modern. I am not saying that it definitely wouldn't, but it takes finessing to make it work.
If your room is dark, it is fun to lean/hand a mirror above the bedside table/chest. It will reflect the light and add some bling, especially if you go for an ornate frame. The two don't have to match exactly but be similar.
As far as a dresser goes, much depends on your needs and your space. A long dresser with mirror above is usually a good solution. Again, like with the bedside tables/chests, keep withing color, scale and style (classical, modern).
When you get here and are ready to go shopping, do not miss the 14th St. design corridor. There are several excellent furniture (new and 2nd hand) that will offer great selections. Take a photo of your bed and any other pieces you've selected. Don't for get room dimensions and locations of windows and doors! They will be only too glad to assist you in selections.
Also, Georgetown has some good shops to check out. And a great cupcake shop. :) Good luck and only get what you love, or at least like a lot!!!!

Thank you so much for your excellent suggestions. Trying to find the right pieces has been very hard and I almost feel like any choice I make will be wrong. I am so uncertain that I have been unable to buy anything. I will try to keep your suggestions about scale, color and style in mind while I shop and thanks for the shopping suggestions also.

The bed is beautiful and will be a great anchor to your room. With a little patience, I am sure it will end up looking great. Time to go flea market shopping.

Instead of night stands, you might use tables that could serve as end tables or corner in the living room, should you so wish. As an alternative, you might use three-drawer chests as night stands so that you would have even more storage space for clothes and accessories.
