Are you saying that LG sells a panel ready fridge, but gives no dimensions for the upper panel?

If LG, the manufacturer, can't or won't help you, I don't see how anyone else would know.

Take delivery of the fridge and have the cabinet maker take measurements off the fridge so he can make the panel.

It's such a narrow fridge/freezer at 22", I would not panel it at all. It's just not worthwhile. Often people panel refrigerators because they don't want a big monolith fridge door among their cabinetry. But yours is 22" wide, so not going to be a problem. Get it with stainless steel doors and be done. Save yourself the grief and the expense.

Unless you live in a small NYC apartment, a 22" wide fridge is really small ...

Are you planning to build a cabinet around theLSBNC1021P refrigerator? Before taking this approach, remember that if this refrigerator fails it may be very difficult to find a 22", counter-depth, panel-ready replacement -- perhaps impossible if the LSBNC1021P is discontinued. I know you said you didn't want a stainless steel model. I'd consider a 24" freestanding refrigerator such as this LG LBNC12231W which requires 2" clearance at the back and none on the sides, and is the same width as the LSBNC1021P when its cabinet is included. If a 24" refrigerator fails it would be easy to find a replacement (and a future owner may not mind a stainless steel model of which there are many). The LBNC12231W is 12 cf while the LSBNC1021P is only 9 cf.

In CR's survey, LG bottom-freezer refrigerators "earned an Excellent rating for predicted reliability".

Note that the refrigerator door panel height calculated above would only cover the refrigerator door and control panel. If the panel should also cover a portion of a cabinet, it would have to be longer; that's probably the reason LG didn't specify its length. If the refrigerator is to be installed in a cabinet, don't cut the refrigerator panel until the refrigerator is in place.

Why is it "unworkable"? Look at the installation instructions for the Thermador column refrigerators; they're 84 pages long.

It is unworkable because Ebenezer Quicklock needs something to criticize without actually having to investigate.

Only you can decide whether you're up to the task of installing this appliance. Can you build a cabinet that meets the ventilation requirements shown on page 10? Can you lift the 145 lb appliance into the cabinet (page 12)? Can you cut, finish, prepare, and install the cabinet doors (pages 13-17)? Is it worth the effort to have a paneled refrigerator over a free-standing (and less expensive) model such as the Smeg FC20UXDNE 24 Inch Stainless Steel Counter Depth Bottom Freezer Refrigerator ($1600) which can be simply be pushed into position between kitchen cabinets?
