Above ALL and Don Juan climbers?

I have a 20 year old John Cabot rose which has had many very productive, might I say sometimes spectacular seasons. But the last few years it isn't unusual to see our JC lose lots of its foliage starting sometime in August and going forward :(.

Over the winter I might just mull over a possible replacement or addition...how are AA and DJ as reliable cane hardy bloomers? (It would be planted right next to the foundation of the house).
