Coordinate flooring with provincial stained red oak in an addition

We are completing an addition on a Dutch colonial style home and debating flooring, whether to stick with red oak or go with something different. Downstairs, it will be an open dining/living area. The upstairs addition is one bedroom and a balcony. The wood isn't too expensive, but we aren't sure if, down the line when we redo the kitchen, if we would extend the wood into it. I want to avoid the obvious separation between old and new.

Your existing floor is nice. I would extend it into the addition. A professional floor installer should be able to do this seamlessly for you. A general contractor, maybe not.

When it comes time to redo the kitchen, either continue the flooring into the remodeled kitchen, or go with something non-wood that doesn't try to look like wood.

Yep, we got a couple quotes from floor installers, waiting on one more next week. The best so far is $7500, which isn't too bad IMO, but if we went with something else, we could probably half that and install it ourselves. I really like LVT and LVP for looks and durability, I just don't know that there is anything that would look OK with our existing floor. I think it's either stick with the same, or switch to a tile, which I don't want

IMO either all wood or all LVP no mixing . But IMO you buy the unfinished flooring to match what you have and make sure you buy enough to do the kitchen later .

I don't think saving $3,750 is worth it. Real wood has the potential to last the life of your house. But it's not my money. :-) Especially since you already have wood in a lot of the house, why change?
