What adhesive/glue can I use with sheet Marmoleum?

We have a very small bathroom, with a 5’ x 5’ floor. We are removing an older Marmoleum floor and are planning to replace it with new sheet Marmoleum. I would like to use a different adhesive than the Forbo product if I can, something locally available if possible and hopefully in a smaller quantity. It becomes too expensive for us to buy a whole gallon of the Forbo glue plus freight for this tiny bathroom. So if that’s absolutely necessary we may have to go with vinyl instead which I hate.

One Marmoleum dealer told us that we could use a different glue as long as it is water-based, but I would like a more specific recommendation. We are pretty succesful DIY-ers but I don’t know much about adhesives/glue. Thanks for any advice you can give.

You'd be better off calling a local flooring/carpet sundry supplier to see what they recommend and make sure it's available. Then inquire with Forbo to ensure the recommended adhesive will work. It's somewhat likely that you'll have to buy a gallon of adhesive but at least you wouldn't have to pay for shipping.

Contact the maufacturer's tech line. They will guide you. It is most likely a universal pressure sensitive adhesive.

Thank you for the replies. Unfortunately our local dealer does charge for freight, and every time i talk to them the price of the Marmoleum has mysteriously gone up. I’m pretty much done with them.

According to the Forbo Adhesive Recommendations, the Forbo L 885 adhesive is to be used. This is an acrylic adhesive according to the description. The Q&A for Roberts 7350 (at Home Depot) says:
- Q: Can this be used for marmoleum fooring
- A: When an acrylic adhesive is recommended for glue down application - Roberts 7350 can be used.

Any updates on what you did? I just did a test where I glued some marmoleum scrap to plywood using woodglue. The woodglue is rated for outdoor use and will be fine in wet conditions now that it has cured. I am wondering if I can get away with using woodglue for the rest of my marmoleum countertops. It seems extremely solid right now.

I’m sure the Forbo folks wouldnt recommend it, but we found the Forbo adhesive that we had saved from the first time we put Marmoleum in that bathroom and used it It worked fine and we’ve had no problems at all. The glue was probably 15 years old but looked fine. I wouldn’t recommend doing this to anyone but it worked out for us and saved a lot of $$
