Sewing two runners together

last modified: 2 years ago

I needed a long, 16 ft runner for a hallway into my bedroom. I really wanted wool as it feels so plush, but there really wasn't a large selection online. So I purchased two 8' identical, runners thinking I'd hire somebody local to sew them together. I'm finding it really difficult to find somebody to do this. I've called three local flooring retailers and they will only work on what they sell. Can anybody help with what type of contractor I should be looking for? Here's a photo of the rug but dimensions are 2'6" x 8'. I've noticed some people just keep two runners and I suppose that is an option, though I think I'd prefer one, long one.

Heavy duty velcro glued to the back would probably hold them in alignment.

You will NOT prefer 16 feet of runner!! Separate them in a logical spot and use as is.

I would never have a runner longer than 8'

What Jan said. And even if you can find someone to do what you want, you'll likely not be happy with the results. Because the runners have a wave pattern and the waves won't match up unless you are very, very, very lucky. The seam will be very obvious.

IMO you never need 16' of runner anywhere . If you insist then velcro is your best bet

there is a thing called carpet tape. Any hardware store sells it.

Tape them together with Gorilla tape, or some kind of strong, heavy-duty tape. Lay face down on a clean surface with the ends butted together and tape. You will probably need someone to help do this. If you don't like the way they look attached together, you should be able to remove the tape.

I would think an upholstery shop could do that with their industrial sewing machines. My concern is the seam underneath where they are joined might be a tripping hazard depending on how thick they are.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting and @JAN MOYER, why do you think that 16' is too long in a 23' hallway?

This is the best solution for your two rugs.

You are not a hotel, am I correct?

The purpose of a runner is yes, to soften , to protect, to deaden noise, to accent and warm a space.

But 16 feet is a ........pain in the ass!!!!. You need a pad, you need to clean beneath it, resettle the rug. It is boring as well. It makes a hall appear as an airport tunnel runway to the PLANE.

Why do you think 8 feet is so readily available : ) ? Right?

Go put the two 8" down on your hall, post a pic. Leave three bare feet BETWEEN them. Another foot at beginning and end of the hall.

Here's a photo of the two runners spaced out.

Wow, the rugs look completely different in this photo, compared with the first. I like the way it looks against the stain color of your floor and think the separation looks fine.

And that looks absolutely lovely! That is how you LEAVE it : ) Do not mess with success. Get some art on that wall, and blow your mind with happiness.

    That looks great.

Yes, the rug looks very different than it did online. The colors aren't as soft and the lines are more delineated. I thought about it for a few days and decided I still liked them so decided to keep. I've found purchasing rugs online very difficult.

This is a hallway between my office and bedroom in a townhouse. I'm just north of Pittsburgh and I really like the luxurious feeling of a soft rug under foot on the bedroom level when we hit the colder months. The rugs are by Bashian and this company does a nice job with wool at a decent price point. The plush is about .75" high.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and I think I'll keep them separated per your suggestions.
