I lke stairs to match the mainf floor stain , as for painting the spindles you could but why?To me the spindles are very busy so I would not draw attention to them and also the runner once the stairs are darker should be lighter too,

Unless your style is traditional you should think about replacing the spindles with something more plain. You may not get past thinking about it as stairwork is very expensive. :-) In any case, white risers and spindles are a popular look. If someone else is doing the work, ask them whether painting is more or less than restaining and factor that into your decision.
