I am confused what type of carpets I should buy to make this place look beautiful and any other decor items that will help this place come together

Your space is beautifully neutral so tell us your color preferences. Almost anything will work, but you can also expand on the neutral theme with black and white. Are there photos of spaces that you like? Favorite colors?

I was thinking doing this arrangements.

Do you want a traditional or contemporary rug for your space. I have posted two sizes so you can see which one works better if you add two accents chairs to the space.

Do you want to accentuate the gray, the blue or the greige in the area?

I agree sofas facing each other. Some kind of large rug to soften the flooring a bit. For the front door I would either get a far wider runner or skip long runner and have an entry rug the width of the two doors. The plants don’t work in that spot in my opinion

Plants are temporary, i will be replacing it with some kind of entryway furniture or consoles table

It’s really a lovely open blank slate you can do a lot with. Don’t feel pressure to fill it all right away. Pick away at it and fill with pieces you love

Tee, you said in another post that orange and yellow are your favorite colors and you also have some blue. Why not add bright poppy orange and yellow to your devore throughout your home and balance it with some blue?

OMG, spell check changed decore to devore right in front of me! Ugh! And I thought I was clumsy.

I also want to add my approval of the arrangement Beverly suggested and you tried out. I like the way it partitions the entry from the living room. I think adding two small chairs and a table are a little busy for this space but Beverly shows you you can borrow these for a party night from another room.

I also am glad you already said you are going to add a console on the wall by the entry. I assume you will add a wall mirror over it? There appears to be a plug-in near the floor and a place to install a light fixture too? You could place a small chair on either side of the console and then borrow them for the living room as needed.

The sofas are not the same length. They cannot face one another

Go with BeverlyFLADeziner suggestion that adds two chairs to the space - I would add swivel chairs for conversational convenience. Look in your closet and see what colors you wear most (other that white or beige). Bouquets of fresh flowers would add texture, freshness and color.

This is a serious question: Sofas of different lengths cannot face each other? Is this a decorating no-no?

What if a person had a full size sofa on one side and a loveseat + sidetable on the other side?

Where do some of the people here come up with these crazy "rules"!

OMG, a 3-seat sofa facing a loveseat ... it looks just fine!

The runner just seems lost. I think a vibrant rug with colors you love in the living room area would be great. I'm with Beverly - I think you can add one or two small swivel type chairs. I guess I'd pick the rug first.

"Jeesh" The sofas can face one another......center the short on the long. It would be nice to do a detailed floor plan and while the op DID write dimensions on her pictures and post those? There's a bump out dimension to the window missing. What is the fire width ( black ) What are the lengths/depths a longest deepest points for each.

Here are few pic with two chairs

The dept from the door to the window is 3 ft and fireplace width is 55”

either of these might be nice (if you like the cooler blue tones). just stay away from the cheap polypropelene material.

Perhaps you already chose a layout, but I would suggest you place the two long Sofas across from each other , one infront of the windows and the other facing it. Put the chairs on the side next to the foyer (?) It will open up space for walking, less knees bumping while trying to get into the seats, and looks more uniform and symmetrical.

Tee, looks like you have the arrangement. Now, please add your signature colors :-)

Choose a rug and add some pillows in your favorite oranges and yellows to add to the ones in blue. Also, replace those two pieces of art by the fireplace with something more colorful. You asked to help you with the "boring" part. Color is the thing that's needed here. And you love oranges and yellows. That will personalize the are and get rid of the boring feel. You lost everything in the fire, mostly all the personal items that would have given your room the non-boring personality. It may take time to accumulate items of meaning, but color is personal, so go ahead and use it. You are at that stage now. You have done a great job building the background in white and black, and now it's time for a right turn. Just coordinate it with your family room colors, your favorite colors.

Also, try just the one chair near the fireplace wall with a small table next to it. I think a wider opening into your living room seating area would be more inviting, and the two chairs is just a little too much. And you need a small table in the corner created by the two sofas. Had you thought of draperies in here as Celery suggested in your family room? Those are another way to add color. Also, they would repeat the vertical movement you have with the fireplace and door. But use a color.

    Tee,

I have created some renderings (ignore that the carpet shrank and imagine the Sofas legs are on the carpet) for you to see how two Sofas facing one another would look. I think the space looks large and the white colors makes it look bigger than it is. I've added variations with color and different artwork, feel free to choose your own art that you love.

To add symmetry to your fireplace wall, I've placed both your frames on one side and used a lengthened art on the other. For the Sofas differing lengths and the confusion over it, you can place both Sofas across one another and I would suggest you to line up one side of both couches and the smaller couch (here I've placed it against the wall) and for the empty space on the side of the loveseat, fill it in with a box for pillows/throws and a large plant.

Adding plants will add color, liven the place up and clean the air up. I have also added one photo with drapes. A nice wallpaper or color in the niche would bring color. And tie the living and dining together. The shelves I saw you used 3 staggered. I put a layout with two that looks easy on the eyes and still functional. Your choice.

Area rug that coordinates w/the front door runner - place under the coffee table that is big enough the sofa/luv seat front legs also sit on it

Thanks everyone for all your suggestion. What colours and designs should I focus on when buying carpets

When I go ti the store there is huge selection and I get overwhelmed.

I think the blue scenario that was posted for you, with the pillows, really livens up the room. Put the couches facing each other for a few days and get used to it. It has been suggested for a reason. The room definitely will feel more open.

I am going to try it for sure

Did you use RPLanner for these renders, @SolidForm? I also use that app and it's been great for creating renders!

Tee, the white and black are your base colors. You've added blue which is very pretty. I still think you should consider warming things up with your favorite oranges and yellows. It looks too cold at the moment, and world be so easy to brighten and warm and de-bore with your favorite colors.

These are what i found so far in carpets. They are all light colour with a bit of black

    Another set

I don’t love the rugs you posted as much as the blue ones. You need more color and less ivory in the rug IMO.

I don't mind either of these rugs, BUT, I think you can do better, overall.

On another note, that artwork is too high, and really doesn't work in that particular spot.

eye level (60-65" from floor to MIDDLE) is where they should be.

    However,

They're too small, and the wrong colors.

let me show you a quick mock up with some diff art.

If you want the blues, then bring in a proper sized print w/the blues and grays to play off your floor/sofa.

instead of a print on the left of FP, get a taller plant, or put that one you have on a taller plant stand

I also like these blue antelope pillows

Or, any of these. You need some pattern in that room. everything is very solid and meh. As long as the tones/colors are all related, you can mix and match prints/patterns.

    love these, the ones above

    Or even the Chinoserie look:

similar colors w/a beautiful print in blues/grays/whites. notice the textured rug w/this one and that coffee table. (I think the one you have is a bit too small)

you could opt for a blue velvet ottoman (doesn't have to be this shape, but the color is yummy

    another blue print option

this would be a cool addition too

I really love this lavender/blue elephant print. paired w/a black marble table, a textured white rug, some black velvet pillows, and black/white/gray throw pillows PLUS a soft lilac throw, would be really pretty next to the marble floors/FP

if you want to stick w/the blue, try those pillows I listed earlier, maybe tie in the black w/this black and white zebra lumbar for the chairs, and a black piece of art.

Agreed with @RedRyder, rugs need more color

I also like the visuals by @SolidForm

@Tee Several posts above have asked what your favorite color is or what colors you love or wear, but you come back and ask what color to use and when blue is suggested you come back with several neutral rugs.

You entitled this post "Help with boring living room". Adding more neutrals will not bring color or life into the space.

I see pink and yellow flowers in your space, do you love either of those colors? What is the color that you wear that makes you feel like a 10? What is the color that calls to you and say "buy me" when you shop? What colors come to mind when you think back to your happiest memories?

Those mock ups help visualize - I’d suggest reusing the two smaller grey and yellow framed pieces stacked on the left and then find a piece of art for the larger wall in a scale like Beth posted. Then take your color inspiration from that and build from there.

Also, use the little table in the corner as an actual end table for one of the sofas in their new position. You need a larger coffee table and you need a long credenza or console table on the long entry wall. Your space is great for art so be bold and have fun with art - that won’t be boring at all!

Tee, we don’t know what colors you like! As of now, your space’s look is very stark and cold, uninviting. You correctly identified that you need more warmth and/or interest; your space is currently neutral, so color choices are up to you. Do you like very cool colors? Go with blue. Do you prefer warmer tones? Look for warmer rugs….look up a color wheel so you can get an idea, if you don’t know which colors are cool, which are warm. If you’d rather add “drama” or interest via artwork or throw pillows, neutral rugs will absolutely work, but you are the only person that knows how much color (in a rug, wall) you are comfortable with, and which tones. I, personally, think your space is cold (all that shiny, almost white tile), and I prefer warmer tones, so I’d stay away from a bunch of cool tones (blew, purples), but this is MY preference, and your may be very different. However: blues in a rug paired with other, warmer tones, can still warm up your space without making if feel colder. Rug options are endless, from a few 100 $ to tens of thousands, but you must start with some idea of what speaks to you. If you really don’t know, get a designer. Explain to them what you are looking for (mood-wise), and they’ll be able to help. One more thing: where you have your plants, maybe try a slim console table….sorry if this has already mentioned and I missed it. Good luck!

Coray and others, Tee likes yellows and oranges. She has lots of posts. She's done a fantastic job rebuilding this house and yard after a fire. Yellows and oranges go great with the blue. Look at her post on her family room.

Another option & an inspiration pic. Find a black & ivory rug that you like; add mustard/deep gold or copper pillows & a black as well as brass accents for warmth.

Sadly the only way you are going to find out is by trying out a few rugs - most people find out that rug schlepping is the only answer as the light in your room can dramatically affect the way a rug looks.

Just a thought: buy the smallest size of any rugs you are considering so the returns are easier. That way, you can compare 3 rugs more easily. Then buy the full size of the winning rug.

@RedRyder Not sure the OP is still following, but when I purchased my last area rug I bought it through Bed Bath and Beyond - much more expensive than buying it elsewhere, but I wanted to be able to return it without having to pay to return. I got the carpet, decided it was the one I wanted, returned it to the local BB&B and ordered it through the lowest priced competitor. (Offered to keep it if they would match the price, but they don't match online competitor prices).

If I had ordered it through the lowest price competitor I would have had to pay to ship it back if I didn't love the rug.

Also found the lowest price by doing a Google Image search. The carpet was being sold multiple places at different prices and under different names / brands, but the details all matched as did the picture (Same size, same weight, same country of origin, same materials . . . ) Saw prices at that time from $319 to over $800 for the same rug. Just grabbed two sites right now that have the same carpet that I bought.
