Hmm. My initial thought is to replace all the tile with the same hardwood that is in the adjacent rooms and also rip out the carpet on the stairs and put it on the stair treads. I know that's an expensive proposition, but I think it will make the house warmer and more cohesive. It will be money well spent.

I'd also paint the balusters on the staircase white as well as the front of the stair risers.

I know you'll be removing the carpet on the stairs, What are the hardwoods upstairs? Oak, like the spindles? So much depends on the Budget, but paint can make a dramatic change without breaking the bank.

If you do change the flooring, remove or square off the columns.

The paint on the walls is beautiful but gives it that dated look. Can you paint the walls white or cream/off-white? Or atleast the entry?

If, as suggested, you paint all the walls and trim including the columns the same off-white color, it would minimize the busy detail everywhere. Use flat paint on the walls and semi-gloss on the trim and columns.

And as suggested, if you decorate with the neutral color scheme, I don't think you would have to make any remodeling changes with these ideas. Possibly remove the dated stair mirror treatment and update the stair runner with a cream or ivory color to go with the new color scheme.

I see a lot of redecorating...paint, floor, carpeting, REMOVING THE WALL MIRROR. How much do you love the house? Looks like substantial amount of money to do it all. Are you okay with doing it?

The stair carpeting may be covering unfinished stairs, the stair railing is builders' grade, and definitely, needs replacing as the stairway design is beautiful.

Thank you, all! it seems like painting the wall and trim the same color is a popular opinion, which I wouldn’t have thought of. I was just assuming we’d leave the trim bright white. i forgot to include that we will definitley be removing all the mirrors, too.

I really only see paint to upscale the vibe and make it yours. Then as you mentioned rugs and furniture will do wonders. Too many expensive opinions here.
