Bosch dishwasher installation problem

last modified: 3 years ago

I am having problems with Bosch 800 dishwasher installation where the dishwasher is 2 cabinets from the sink. My plumber ran a water line through the bottom of the cabinets and for some reason added a black drain hose through the top of the cabinet. Looks like the issue is with the hose behind the dishwasher which has a drain at the bottom of the unit.

Looking for advice on how to run the drain hose and what to do with the extra drain hose behind the dishwasher. There is about 1" or so space behind the dishwasher and the extra hose creates a loop preventing the dishwasher from being flushed with the cabinet. I am considering moving the drain line to the bottom of the adjacent cabinet and reconnecting it to the black hose inside the cabinet. The only issue is that I will have an extra hose behind the drawers. Looks like I will have to pull the extra hose while pushing the dishwasher in.

The dishwasher was draining ok before it was pushed into the cabinet but now it is showing an "add salt" and "rinse aid" error that I am not able to clear. I have pulled the dishwasher out to make sure the line is not pinched but that did not help. The dishwasher spec states that the max length of the drain hose is 155" which should be ok in my case.

Bosch tech is coming on Tuesday to adjust the springs for the panel-ready doors and I hope he will be able to clear the error.

Thank you,

Margaret

There reasonably needs to be sufficient slack to pull the dishwasher from the cavity when service is required ... behind the dishwasher, in the adjacent cabinetry, or under the sink. Behind the dishwasher is easier regards to service to avoid dealing with pulling it through the cavity partition when pushing the machine back into position.

The length of the drain hose has no relation to the "add salt" and "add rinse aid" advisories. There are sensors on the reserviors for those products. Have you added salt and rinse aid?

You can disable the machine's onboard water softener if you don't want to utilize it, and thus not need to deal with the salt. Check the user manual for how to do that.

Rinse aid must be used for the drying process to work properly and to avoid the machine extending the cycle time for heating the final rinse water to a higher temperature to compensate, which it will do if the rinse aid dispenser is empty. The rinse aid dosage can be adjusted to a lower level so it doesn't need to be refilled as often but it may not allow dispensing to be completely disabled (check that user manual again for details).

Thank you dadios. I think the "add salt and rinse aid" is a bogus error caused by the kink in the drain line during installation. The plumber tested the dishwasher but looks like it stopped running after was pushed between cabinets. A rinse aid has been added, there is no container for salt and the dishwasher is totally non-responsive, with only a slight beep when the on/off button is pressed.

I hope to get enough slack by running drain line to the right and then up to the left.

    Regards,

    Margaret

Based on Figure 3 of the installation instructions, it appears that the the water, drain, and electrical cords must be routed through a cutout into the bottom-rear of an adjacent cabinet, not run behind the dishwasher.

Bosch technician could not fix the problem. He called the main office and they initially told him to check the polarity. Polarity was ok then they said that it might be a control panel or something else. He has left without fixing the problem.

Also, he said that door tension cannot be adjusted even though it is a struggle to pull the door down.

I am also checking on Kitchenaid panel-ready dishwashers. Unfortunately, looks like I am stuck with Bosch 800 since ( from what I am reading about KA) KA dishwashers are very deep and the front panel cannot be flushed with cabinets even after the removal of insulation on the back.

At this point, I will try to get a replacement unit from Bosch and hope the new unit will work.

    Very frustrating experience.

I plan on removing most of the slack and running the drain hose through the bottom and up in the adjacent cabinet - the total should be around 110-120 inches. Bosch spec states that max of 155 3/4" (396 cm).

"Bosch technician could not fix the problem."

Did you try resetting the dishwasher by holding the Start button for at least 3 seconds? You might also turn off the circuit breaker for a few seconds.

"Also, he said that door tension cannot be adjusted even though it is a struggle to pull the door down."

The dishwasher is designed for a panel whose weight is within a certain range. It sounds like the panel is too light.

Unplugging, and holding the reset button for 3 seconds did not help. The dishwasher remains responsive. Just a bearly audible beep when on/off is pressed.

I have a standard 3/4" panel (custom-made from 3/4 plywood). I did not check the weight before installation but I see this type of panel on all dishwashers. Unfortunately, Bosch doesn't allow for tension adjustment.

"Margaret Kapica: Unfortunately, Bosch doesn't allow for tension adjustment."

Are you sure about that? An online search finds reference that some models that take a custom door panel have a door tension adjustment via screws that increase the spring tension. However, decreasing it requires changing to lower-tension springs (there are several to match the weight of the custom panel). You haven't cited your specific model number to check. There likely is more than one model within the 800 series.

I have SHVM78Z53N/20 and Bosch tech told me that there is nothing that can be done even after I asked for a different set of springs and if there is a way to adjust tension. Will try to call Bosch directly and ask them, this is the only thing that I could find in Bosch's manual.

"This dishwasher can accept custom door panel weights ranging

from 7 to 24 lbs; however, the dishwasher comes from the factory

ready for custom panel door weights from 11 to 18 lbs.

If you plan on using a door panel that is not 11 to 18 lbs."

Will call Bosch tomorrow and see if there is anything that can be done. I hope to get a replacement unit ( have one on hold at the appliance store) and will make sure I will weigh the panel.

The flashing "error" add salt, rinse aid is not even listed in the service manual and there is no way to clear it. I have looked for different reset sequences but nothing worked.

I searched your model at Bosch Home Appliances website.

The User Guide does not address salt for an onboard water softener other than indicating the salt compartment cap #28 on the photo on Page 10 as being an "optional feature that may or may not be included with your dishwasher." Does your unit have the removable cap there? Presumably not or an additional document would probably be included regards to the water softener feature. Rinse Aid is covered on pages 13-14. Adjusting the dosage to 0 effectively turns off the Add Rinse Aid signal but is not advised for the reasons I mentioned above.

The Spec Sheet states custom door panel weight of 7 to 24 lbs is acceptable but it's factory-ready for 11 to 18 lbs, call Bosch customer service for assistance with panels not 11 to 18 lbs (which I presume involves obtaining appropriate springs).

This Service Bulletin is what I found regards to changing the springs, although it dates to 2006 and may not be applicable to your model.
