No more defending SpeedQueen.

I’ve always been a defender of SpeedQueen, but……

Speed Queen purchased a batch of defective inverter control boards in the 2015-2016 era for their $2000 front loaders. My machine is one of the affected machines and after 7 years it died. Given that this is an acknowledged manufacturing defect, one would expect SpeedQueen to stand behind their product.

The issue is reported in these two threads among others.

Speed Queen inverter board failure (automaticwasher.org)

Help! My Speed Queen is dead. (automaticwasher.org)

It’s a situation that SQ knows well and apparently, until recently were sending out updated boards to all affected customers, which is good considering the msrp for the board is $1200.

I contacted SQ customer support and was told that (paraphrase) “Our technicians tell me that all the board failures occurred within the first year after manufacture and since yours is 7 years old we won’t be doing anything for you”

Funny how the above forum post shows a 2015 machine like mine, which has a SN a few hundred away from mine had the same ED44 error on the same 803949 control board.
The poster’s washer failed in Dec 2021, so was well outside the 5 year warranty period and well outside the "one year from manufacture" and they replaced the board.

So, SpeedQueen is OK with a 7 year lifespan on a $2000 washing machine, about what you’d expect out of a $500 Samsung.

No more Speed Queen products for me. I now have an LG washer sitting where the SQ did. SQs work great, but the company does not care about residential customers.

Gosh. Really sorry to hear this Ken. This is one of my dislikes about SQ. Should something go wrong, you may be out of luck. I have the AWN432 and know that should something go sidways, it will be a costly repair. But they all are, aren't they? Plus, I don't like how SQ HQ on the phone likes play to dumb when you have an issue. They did that with me rather early on, with a well known problem. They said they had never heard of that before. Not a good look.

Hope you have better luck with the LG!

Sea Sea, Yes, we really liked the SQ FL, but Alliance has shown their true colors. A machine that is supposed to last 20 years dies in 7 due to self confessed defective boards and it's "tough luck, buddy".

Who wants to do business with an outfit like that?

Turns out there's a place online who will rebuild the control board for a hundred bucks or so. Guess I'll send my board off, get it fixed, reinstall and sell the SQ on Craigslist for a few hundred. I just would hate to see a near mint condition washer go to the landfill.

    Ken,

Sorry to hear about your issue with you SQ Front Loader. I have one as well but it is sitting boxed up in the cellar for when my Bosch Nexxt finally bites the dust so that Control Board issue has got me a bit concerned. I see e-bay currently has the 803949 board new for$389.

Let us know if you do get your Board rebuilt and provide the company's name too.

Ken, this is so disappointing. We have learned, over the decades, that almost anythng we buy might have a problem once the warranty expires; any time beyond that with no repairs is just icing on the cake, IMO. All manufacturers of any product know the life expectancy.

If you search for my post from one year ago when I replaced our Miele W4842 with a SQ FF7 and read it, you will understand why I didn't buy another Miele. I was $nakebit. It's all a roll of the dice. Options for a smaller capacity washer that came with a pedestal option and performed well were quite limited. Otherwise, I might have looked closer at the compact LG. I hope you get many long years of good servcie from your new machine.

Jeff, I wish I had the room to keep it, but my WW shop and my garage are packed. No basement I'm afraid.

Cavimum: Yes, I hear that, but a random failure beyond the end of the warranty is one thing, a known manufacturing defect is another. They have done nothing illegal, but still, ethically I think they stink. The FF7 is a great machine, I envy you!

I hope you’re happy with your new LG that is what i have and it performs great i wash almost everything on the perm press cycle since someone here posted that it uses the most water. The towel cycle also uses plenty of water. Does yours still come with the water plus feature? i noticed on new ones now in Home Depot that feature waa missing

    MiMi,

So far so good. The spin is very fast at 1300rpm, even though the Speedqueen was no slouch at 1200rpm, the clothes do seem drier. It's nice that the door opens to the left, it makes transferring to the drier easier. We haven't tried the "steam" setting yet. I understand - as people on this site like to say - the hot water is "dumbed down", whereas the Speedqueen used straight hot water on the hot setting. I guess the onboard heater balances up that aspect though.

The one real negative on the LG is the very long cycles. Where the SQ would do a heavy duty load in 46 minutes, the LG takes up to 2 hours using some algorithm I don't understand. Sometimes, heavier loads are done quicker than light loads, so I don't know how it decides on cycle time. It does have a speed cycle of 15 minutes, but I haven't tried that either.

There's no mention of water plus on the machine or the manual.

Of course, I expect it to last longer than seven years which was all the SQ could manage,

Reading the thread, and I think I am most disappointed by someone telling ken c "Sorry, we won't be doing anything for you". That is so un-customer friendly it is shocking. Even if they were not willing to send a new board, they should have offered to pay for at least half of a new one it; or repaired it at no cost since apparently they can be repaired based on what was shared. Not every consumer-even those who are well off -wants to spend money needlessly or on a whim. SQ appliances are expensive. Service and longevity are expected.

armjim. I am most disappointed by being treated like a fool. To be told "all failures occurred within one year of sale" when there are threads everywhere, including the one I linked above where SQ comped a person a new board with a machine that was 5-1/2 years old, and out of warranty because they admitted liability.

    Great machine, sh**y company.
