Need help selecting a countertop color.

I posted before but wer are starting over. Our backsplash was done last year but we didn't plan on a new counter top until ours was damaged. Now we need to get a new one to coordinate with the current backsplash which will be brought down to meet the new countertop. The 4inch backsplash will be removed.

We can get quartz (preferred) or granite from MSI, LG, or Envi and we are using a very good local fabricator. We aren't going to change any other design elements as the backsplash isnt even a year old (and everyone who sees it loves it), and the cabinets were built 4 years ago.

Thanks for your advise!

Perhaps reread the many countertop suggestions and photos on your previous thread. Many comments suggest a very plain, solid color countertop since your backsplash is busy, dramatic and the focal point of your kitchen, plus you have a patterned floor. There were suggestions to look for a plain, dark countertop since it will be hard to match the light background color of your backsplash tile while also matching the tone of your light floor so best to just contrast and go dark with the counter.

Hi. I did but I haven't found one that goes well in my eyes. I went to MSI twice already and brought home samples. Perhaps someone who knows their inventory can suggest some specific colors.

Why just MSI? Go to a fabricator that carries several quartz brands so you can choose from a larger variety of colors. One fabricator I visited carried something like 10 different quartz brands.

I looked at MSI’s website and tried out a few quartz colors with their ”See it in your space” visualizer.

I think the soapstone look ones would look nice. I saw a couple you could get samples of to take home.

If you wanted a lighter countertop, I tried several mostly solid lighter off white colors and they all looked too cool toned with the tile and floor.

I felt like this one called Bayshore Sand went the best with the tile and the floor. It picked up the beautiful caramel color of your cabinets too.

No. Too monochromatic, looks as if from 70’s 80’s. I think the MSI shadow grey shown previously look good.

Sherry, the beige above would not be my choice either, but I wanted to show a lighter color because looking at the OP’s previous thread, it seemed they were leaning toward a white color which imo looked way too cool toned.

These are two I would personally consider if this was my kitchen.

    Black Soapstone

    Nero Mist - Granite

(This one is more of a solid color, so it might be better since the tile is quite a bold pattern)

The Shadow Grey Quartz that Kristen suggested looks like it would be a perfect match color wise.

The reason I don’t like it quite as well as the other two above is that it seems to only come in the shiny polished finish.

I would just personally prefer a honed or brushed finish with OP’s kitchen style. But if they like the shiney, it would look great!

Although, looking at this overhead picture, it sure does not look polished, but it said it was in the specs.

you said you weren't doing the 4" piece? how will you fill in that gap? do you have more tile? won't the cuts/pattern be off if you fill in that space?

I really like the Shadow gray choice Kristen suggested. You may be able to get it in a suede/honed finish. try a sample to see if it goes w/the tile.

they also have a charcoal quartz in a matte finish that resembles soapstone:

MSI has Calacatta Laza (I believe).

Or, if you want something that resembles concrete, numerous companies make a quartz alternative

here are a few of the warmer tones

Sparkling white quartz is inexpensive. AND this is readily available in a pre-fab countertop. much cheaper option. a 24"X9' pre-fab like this would be about $600 or so. The fabricator would deliver to your house and cut it on site to fit

We plan to have the tiles extend down to the new counter. It'll be approximately half a tile at the bottom. The full design is actually in the middle so this would be a half design right below it and match similarly to the half design right above it so it won't look awkward, especially given the size and boldness of the pattern.

I painted my old countertop black to give us a visualization of what they would look like. There's actually a black quartz color that has tiny brown specks in it that we think might work.

We'd prefer to stay away from natural stone because it is not as durable as quartz.

How much you think of the darkness in the kitchen and the possible color.

I specify Midnight Majesty Concrete quite a bit. The little speckles will work nicely with your floor. The dark top looks great in your kitchen.

You're heading in the right direction with the dark, very plain counter. It won't fight with the two patterned areas (floor and splash). Great idea to paint the counters to really see how it will look in the horizontal plane and in a much larger size than counter samples.

That will look great! I saw this photo which showed the two Midnight Majesty finishes. I think the one on the right is the Concrete. I really like that one with your tile.

Dark is definitely the way to go. Soapstone is a slightly “softer” black and would look great as well. The beiges just don’t work with that dramatic tile.

Putting the 4” piece of tile to meet the countertop will work. It’s a dramatic tile and the countertop needs to be the supporting actor. Glad you like the dark options.

Thank you everyone. With the help of all of you on and offline we are going to go with the midnight Majesty countertop. Now the next question is what color sink? I think a black one might be too dark It was wondering if our original choice of this dark brown sink would look nice given the light brown flex within the midnight Majesty countertop.

    Undermount? Or farmhouse sink?

Stainless steel will look nice with that countertop. If you are on Houzz enough, you read the complaints about black sinks - especially if you have hard water.

Ivory might work since your tile has a light background.

Never select a countertop color from online photos. While this color and finish were suggested, it may not be right for you. Get a sample and see it in person. Also, make sure the concrete finish is acceptable to you as it does show water and grease a little differently than polished. Then select a sink using this sample.

I would not do a dark sink it shows everything..scum etc…classic stainless steel will look great under mount.
