I cannot fit a table to the left of the sofa. The very large piece of furniture is centered/anchored on the wall and cannot be moved.

@ffpalms, we use the room a lot. For reading, we use the chairs flanking the fireplace. I like your choices but I don't think that is what I need. I am also not a fan of the torchiere style for this room. I just am not sure if a tall skinny candlestick style lamp will work.

I agree with you, upper lights are the worst. I always feel like overall it's either too dim and diffused, or waaay too bright. But worst of all is how unflattering it is for people, and the obnoxious blinding glare that some canned lights impart. Just ugh.

If you're replacing uppers with lamps, you will need 4 or more so the room feels well lit. I suggest using something with a white shade to diffuse the light. Opaque shades (such as brass) will direct the light down and the overall that area will feel darker. For tight spaces, you might consider wall sconces instead of a floor lamp. Some can be plugged in if you want to be able to move them or can't have wiring installed (but there are way more options for hard wired).

But to answer your question about floor lamps -- You definitely have a traditional feel to your home. I would go with something like Pottery Barn (or a similar look). For example:

All of your other lamps are brass or gold, so I would mix it up with something like this.

The location of items requires some adjustments.

I like floor lamps that have fabric shades to keep the light in the room from becoming harsh and hot.

I like the simplicity of the Target lamp. Though it doesn’t look like it, the description says the shade is glass.

@ffpalms, yes the description does not match the picture I like the picture so we shall see. I will update when it gets delivered. But this is what I think will work best so if anyone has other sources please send them my way.

Are you able to pull the sofa from the wall and place a sofa table behind it? Im not sure if you’ll have enough room with the large piece, but this would allow you to place two minimal (slim) lamps at each end of the sofa table behind your sofa. This would help with your ambiant lighting and give some symmetry. The orher lamp you have could be placed somewhere else in the room.

Thank you @debbie4151 for that suggestion. I have a sofa table that I tried behind the sofa, but it just does not work. The sofa is pulled away from the windows, you can navigate behind. My dog and grandkiddos love it! I worked with an interior designer with this space and the current placement of the furniture works great. I just love lamps over recessed lighting. My contractor/husband begs to differ.

• If they're too bright and dimmable, you can add a dimmer (e.g., Lutron LED+)
• If they have bulbs, you can swap the bulbs for ones with a lower temperature (2700K, 3000K)
• If there's glare, you can swap them for ones whose lens is recessed.

Sorry but why can't the loveseat be centered in front of the windows?

@ffpalms well unfortunately the Target lamp was a bust. In addition to confusing description, it was less than 5 ft tall. Too short for what I need. Easy return though, dropped it off at store.

I also think the lamp is too tall. If your goal is to lighten up a dark corner, you might want to place a mini lamp on a stack of books on your table.

Is the lamp at the left end not too tall? I would almost be tempted to try it in the corner where it would light up that area better. It looks like it would be shining in peoples eyes when sitting on the sofa or in the chairs.

Too bad we didn't see the Target one. Five feet sounds like a good height.
