Paint rock wall?

Greenish grey granite wall, which unfortunately matches the grey outside (live in New England). Thinking of painting with a white wash, which could also help with the mini-split standing out like it does. Am I missing other ways to handle this room? What are others thoughts on the wall?

    Or maybe solid white?

Whether you whitewash it or paint it solid white is six of one, half dozen of the other IMO. Be sure the white is warm, not cool, because your floors are warm. You need a more substantial mantel. The one you have also looks high, but see if there is a code that specifies how many inches you have to leave between the firebox and the mantel. You could do something more or less rustic depending on what you like.

I believe that is a stone veneer and I would remove it. Who thought placing a mini split over a fireplace was a good idea? Does that violate any codes?

Once you get a plain wall, then get back to us. It will be a nice large wall to place the TV on.

Do you need to keep the fireplace? If it were mine, I'd drywall over the whole thing.

I'd keep it because it matches the outside of the house and it is unique. If you do so, then carry the greenish tint into the room. As to the mini-split, if it can be painted, try to paint it so that it blends in to the stone. Either that or make it a feature by incorporating it into other elements that you hang on the wall.

@BeverlyFLADeziner Thank you for the feedback. You are correct - they are 4 inch veneers.

I would remove it too. I would also have someone remove that mini split to another area, thats not a great place for it there.

IMO that placement for the minisplit ruined that fab wall. So now since some of the stone was damaged it would be a real pain to repair. BTW I love that FP so if possible I would keep it but you do not share your style. This is a awesome MCM FP so what is your style.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting Thank you! Agree with you (and all others) about the visual minisplit's impact on this wall. We were thinking that a fully white/white washed wall can help alleviate that a bit, as it would then fall into the background.

I like MCM and we have some pieces, but I don't necessarily want to build the room around that style. We are keeping the fire place (it is NE).

What are thoughts on perhaps only doing white down to a point on wall?

I think the detail and the color are not adding to the beauty of the room…painting the stone in whatever finish you prefer would be a good start….

also a nice big surround ….in another material…would be a big step in the right direction to correct/disguise the tiny scale of the opening

IMO all or nothing and Ilean toward nothing I would remove the mimisplit and at least see how mucg damage was done before going to ectremes .. This is my FP in my 1956 MCM ranch I thought I was going to cover it in concrete when we first started renovating and now it is my favorite thing in the 2 spaces .It backs onto my kitchen
