Can you also replace the stair runner with the Selke design you’re considering?

I don't think the Annie Selkerug works at all. Your wallpaper and Persian rug combo are fabulous. Can you add another Persian rug?

Do you need a door mat there instead? Seems like anything nicer would get ruined.

I would try a solid dark color that doesn’t stand out against the wood floor as much, but echoes either blue or burgundy from the other rug.
The size makes a difference— too puny and it doesn’t have enough “ presence” or even function- too big and I guess would interfere with floor vent.

Consider rugs that are square rather than rectangular- then when offset from vent slightly, that shape may not look as uncentered and also gives more “ forward “ surface for wiping feet upon entry.

I agree that you might find a doormat, rather than rug, that looks better. The Waterhogs and similar have some heft and texture but can be cleaned ( outside).

An entry foot- mat to me needs to be either machine washable or hose- outside tolerant. It’s hard to find a cleanable product as just a rug. I have found some washable latex - backed small ones at Target and Home Depot but not necessarily in the colors I think would be best for your space. I like pattern mixing but I think a solid dark for this rug would help keep focus on the other components tgst are already working together in your entryway.

If you don’t mind a bit of purchase/ return , you could trial some items from local stores even if not rugs or the right rug- bathmats in dark rich colors, wrong fabric/ right color small rugs - to get an idea of what seems to work best for color and size/ shape, and then focus your search, internet search terms, and ordering.

I would not mix those 2 rugs. I would just get a 2x3 door mat. You can find oriental rugs in that size too.

IMO the wallpaper drives the bus and I do not like it with that Persiab rug at all. One star per space and for sure in small spaces . I would do the same stair runner as rug and as simple as possible . This is a house so get something outside the door to trap mud and water then the rug inside is just for shoe removal. I think something like this with a hint of geometric but sutle and do the stairs and the rug the same

I have a similar set up. The floor vent under a window prevented me from putting a long rug against the door wall. I found a round one (4' diameter?) that filled the entry area perfectly and didn't cover the vent.

Disagree about one "star" per space. Yawn! You can have several stars in the space, but they do need to complement each other.

What a beautiful space! I actually love the gorgeous Persian with the wallpaper. Yeah, they're both stars and maybe a little 'competitive.' So what? Many people love that layered, interesting, "eye candy" appeal. I'd leave the Persian where it is and if I needed something at the door, I'd add an unobtrusive mat (such as a Waterhog) in similar tone to the floor color.

You appear to have great vision. Celebrate and expand upon that!

Thanks to all the commenters. Advice taken, Annie Selke samples returned. Looking at a subtle diamond patterned jute rug, but awaiting samples. I don’t need a major waterproof rug in this area, as I have a large 10 foot covered front porch with a large outdoor area rug just outside the front door. I’ve measured and the only shape rug that fit the area and miss the vents (oddly there are two in this space about 3 feet from each other on opposite walls) is a rectangle in a 9’ x 3 ‘ size, which I can get in a custom size in the rugs I’m considering. The carpet on the stairs is brand new , as I just moved into this renovated home about 3 months ago, so do not wish to replace at this time. In the future when it needs replacing will remember the advice of matching stair carpet to adjacent custom rug!

Just remember to consider how you will clean what is basically a doormat and feet- wiping rug. So the Waterhog idea- which is not the only option of course- was because they can be cleaned by owner albeit requires outdoors, hose , scrubbing, and the come in dark colors which hide surface discoloration until you’re ready to clean and I think are latex- backed, which I believe is suitable for wood floors. And for size, I might be missing the dimensions of your space, but I guess I was not thinking you would be trying to cover a major part of the entry hall with a rug being used as the immediate “ foot wipe” part particularly if can only be 3 ‘ wide. But, you may have a certain vision in mind.

The wallpaper in the foyer is running the show. I don't think your rug selections work with what you have placed on the wall. Too bad the wallpaper is not more in keeping with the style of the home which seems to lean "Arts & Crafts".

The rug and wallpaper are kind of insane together but in a great way. In fact, I don't think I'd like the wallpaper alone, but with that rug, it is just an incredible combo. I wouldn't ruin the good thing you've got going with yet another floor covering. You already have the stair runner and the Persian rug. I'd just leave it at that.

You said you don't need any kind of protective floor covering because of the outside rug. Should that change I would get a small water hog mat for just in front of the door in a color as close to the floor as possible. Some water hogs look cheesy, but others can look great. It is all in the color, shape, and pattern. I'm enticed to see the rest of your home. Congrats!

Any reason you can’t block the vent? I’ve bought inserts to do just that when I need to stop the airflow so I could cover it.
