The "year of the plate" - ?

Just read this on "A Spoonful of Benjamin", designer Benjamin Reynaert's IG account: "I dare to venture 2023 the year of the plate. It's sometimes awful to think of not using plates you love on the table but why not go vertical ... especially with pieces that exude color, personality and uniqueness. I find the best end uses are laissez faire endeavors, not too precious or too arranged, and feel as though they might move around often. It seems the best punctuation marks in my favorite rooms these days aren't necessary florals, art or textiles, they're plates."

And I agree! More and more, I am drawn to the use of plates as decorative wall elements. Pictures from Reynaert are below ...

You are all a bunch of enablers, especially you, Miss Mtn.

My plan, once my kitchen is finished, was to put a collection (which I haven't started yet, lol) of blue and white dessert plates on the plate rail that circles the kitchen. I thought it would tie together the blue drum chandy that will be in the kitchen. I had visions of creams, and stone and crisp blues in a kitchen that would feel traditional and dare I say-- a bit frrench country.

But then I found some other plates and was thinking of the old magneverde quote to decorate for the life you live, not the one you want (I'm paraphrasing). So what did I do? I fell in love with plates that I found on Anthropologie and am holding back from ordering others from that collection (at obscene prices with shipping) on ebay, etc.

The collection is by Lou Rota for Anthropologie and I ordered the ones that are still sold there at $18 each. Worst case scenario, I'll use them at my cottage if they don't look good. They ship in May.

I ordered the flamingos and the ones on the bottom row. So now my shades of blue plan is a complete wash. But aren't these fun???

Mtn, I suppose this is payback for the Thanksgiving plates I made you buy.

Wait wait, how is this my fault? So cute though, and far more interesting!

I love the plates you made me buy. They are so pretty and work so well in my room.

I love those plates, Jojo .

"Wait wait, how is this my fault?"

You and your Anthropologie alphabet plates created a monster.

Another lovely display, I like the monochromatic style of it.

Hopefully the “rude” clock doesn’t make their guests feel anxious and put out, as they say on the Design Dilemma board ad nauseam.

oooh @Jilly, i like that wood box. I wonder if it is a silverware box? And that cabinet, buffet or whatever it is. I have a similar one saved on MP, but really I need a longer one. I let one get away. Most of the ones I look at are buffets, although I'm not going to use it in that manner, it will go in our home office! The search continues!!

Tina, I’m about to head out for a few hours, I’ll see later if I can find out what it is. I’m curious, too.

Yes, I love love that style of buffet!

Ida, sorry for the hijack, but I think you’ll like this. :)

I discovered something this morning on Cote de Texas (an excellent blog post, I highly recommend it) … antique and vintage carpet balls. Now I’ve gone down that rabbit hole and want one.

The post is an in-depth look at the history of the Sutton Place neighborhood and homes — a long-time fascination of mine. Joni really put the work in on dates, pictures, and interesting commentary. It’s very long and very detailed.

Anyway, one of the long ago owners of 1 Sutton Place displayed collected balls on the staircase, which were all sold later at auction:

I’m enjoying looking them up. :)

Love Joni at Cote de texas, haven't looked at her blog in a while. Cool use of the carpet balls.

@Jilly your "rude clock" is actually an antique barometer.

Off to discover carpet balls. ETA: did not know that's what they were called. LOL . I actually own a wooden one.

Jojo, my second to the last plate is stuck in Northern California somewhere. There is a store there that offered the plate on line, I bid and won it. They have spent two weeks trying to find it in their store, or so they say.

Funny coincidence, they are very near a town with the same name as one of the towns I live in. Let's say it was "Mtnville." The reason this is especially funny is that I belong to the Mtnville Cooking Club. The woman who runs it got an inquiry from someone who wanted to join. For a few months she would email and say she hoped to make it. One month even discussing what she'd bring. Her last email said she would not be able to come. She had never realized we were in Mtnville, CT .... she was in Mtnville, CA! Haha

I have been rethinking the arrangements of all my plates and even this morning hung another plate. I've also been googling all sorts of plates and I need to stay away from this thread!

Sueb, sorry, I just saw your question re stuff on my mantel ...the birds and the original Tang Dynasty horse……….hee hee NOT! I love those birds. The bigger one especially.. The teeny ones are cheapies for outside. I love the look of black metal against white. Example below of ancient family things.

    , MTN, that’s a funny story!

I believe carpet balls were used in a game? i very rarely see them in antique stores. ☹️

@jojoco, you guys are dangerous. I just ordered the bee and the owl plates. Anthro also had another very sweet bee dessert plate. I think I'm anxious for spring.

    I know, Barncatz—we’re the worst!

Ack, I should’ve caught that, Allison! I thought of you when I saw the balls — was it you that had that beautiful collection of glass fishing floats?

Mtn, I think so, too … sure wish I had one of those.

I would order some metal birds but I’m too busy buying broken ceramic babies thanks to another thread (Ida).

Nakedness seems to be a thing with you now Sue.

I love green glass and also collect the floats.

    Beautiful, Tina!

Thank you Jilly! the fishing floats are now in an old metal basket atop our antique ice chest. i moved them after i found my old pottery bowl.

This thread is like crack. I'm going plate shopping this weekend. And I made the mistake of using the search words "vintage plates" in FB marketplace. I half expect a plate salesperson to knock on my door.

eta Martinca, you offer some beautiful inspiration!

Tina Marie, Whenever I see a snippet of your house I just love it. Tour!

    Mtn: ”now”?

    last modified: 2 years ago

@Tina Marie Yes they are used in lawn games too (like my wooden ball).

@Jilly Yes, my famous balls reside in the MBath toilet area, next to a metal crow that belonged to my mother. The wire basket belonged to her mother. I have several more stored and the three large ones are on the screened porch.

    I love that vignette, Allison!

This plate has arrived, including a wall hanger!, but I have to now figure out where it wants to be hung.

Thank you Mtn! Most of my pics would be ”snippets”, but I”ll try to post more soon. Re the fishing floats, there is a larger one on our mantel, and i also have a trio in a smaller flower bed!

@Tina Marie, let me know if you want to join my Fishing Floats support group.

You know how you go down a Pinterest rabbit hole, and then later you go back and the Pinterest Fairies think you’re back for more of the same? Yeah. Well just figured I’d share another cute plate-display idea.

I think these are all, or mostly, Anthro plates.
