I'm going to presume that, when you say "skirting," you mean baseboard molding. I have MDF throughout my 20+ year old house, and it has held up well. The advantage of MDF is that it is uniform, resists denting, holds paint well, and won't warp. You do not want to use it in a bathroom because it will swell if you have puddling on the floor or spray from a shower and the MDF absorbs it. As far as how to install it, there are many excellent videos on YouTube; just go there and search for "install baseboard molding".

I bet the UK has trim carpenters : ) I'd find one.

I have a MCM home we did very simple MDF 4" high baseboards very simple to install a quick fill of nait holes and paint Have had them for 15 yrs not one issue. We have them everywhere including the bathrooms no isses there either .
