I should have insisted on matte

Redoing kitchen and these porcelain tiles were just installed. (Grout finish tomorrow) I originally wanted matte, but the tile store owner convinced me shiny cleans better and will look less dull. Seems too shiny to me and out dated, not to mention dangerous. Anyone out there want to change my mind or recommend a product to minimize slippery floor?

Matte is a far, far better fit IMO. This photo looks like it is from a saloon, not a normal household's kitchen. Granted, you don't have to change all of them - you can place a few rows with matte, and conceal the rest under the cabinetry and rugs (depending on your plan, of course)

Do you know if the tiles are rated for "wet"? They should be for a kitchen just as in a bathroom.

They are. It definitely will be slippery when wet, but supposedly it’s a more porous porcelain. There will also be an island, small table cabinetry and appliances for less floor surface.
I think I need to figure out how to leave this floor

@Rochel Block, what do you mean by this: "supposedly it’s a more porous porcelain."

They tell you that shiny cleans better but then you say that "supposedly it’s a more porous porcelain". Wouldn't that make it worse for cleaning if it can absorb stuff?

I wouldn't trust anything that this tile store says!

Polished tile looks good on walls and sometimes on the floors of very modern Miami condos.

What is your style? Are the house and furniture/decor going to be modern?

Do you have an area you can run a wet test for slipperiness? (is that a word?) Not flood the new floor but try a piece underfoot wearing your most common footwear.

One of the most dangerous floors I ever encountered was in my mothers guest bathroom. It did not look particularly shiny and was a sheet vinyl, not tile. Stepping out of that shower was taking one's life in hand - it was terrible. I can't imagine a senior on it, and thankfully she wasn't. The light reflecting nature isn't always a good indication. A sneaky floor without gloss may surprise you just as often as a high shine surface.

I went down in the lobby entrance to a mall once. It wasn't raining. I was wearing leather soled shoes. Those tiles did not look slick. I wasn't injured but called some attention to myself. On my way out, not in, so packages flying in all directions.

I'm not sure I agree the shine is outdated, it depends entirely on the room and its style.

Lay out newspaper over everywhere cabinets will cover and reassess.

Personally, I think it’s too much shine. I also think it will be pretty slippery but even matte, textured tiles can be slippery when wet (as in my current home). Unless you totally love the tile, I’d remove it now.

Personally, I would remove the floors and eat the cost. It is a much better alternative than trying to live with them for years.

Thanks for all your advice and thought provoking feedback😀

It will be dangerous. I slipped on a shiny bathroom floor in a vacation rental despite being very careful. Your kitchen will have slick spots. I am sorry that you are dealing with this.

If uou can remove them and exchange DO IT!! our house had glossy floors on one of our bathroms when we bought it. 2 kids in ER with sprained wrist, and sprained arm, and I myself twisted, oulled my hip. All 3 of us had slipped and fell with those horrible floors. We recently renovsted our bathroom and chose matte porcelain. So happy to have them gone!

I second third and forth the slippery dangerous warnings. Neighbor broke his hip coming from his pool. And it wasn’t half as shiny as yours. …and a comment on Matte tile… ours is a wood look matte finish. It often looks smudgy when the sunlight shines across it. Annoying. I can’t keep it looking as clean as I like. If you do change your tile look at it very carefully and do some dirt tests in real lighting. People just walk on ours and smudge city. 🙁

Tile manufacturers get a slip rating for their tile to qualify for use on a floor. Check with the manufacturer or check carefully the specs.

Post what the rest of your kitchen will look like. Post what the spec is of this floor. Post what grout color you selected. Do you have a pool or hot tub? Do NOT piece in matte tiles - huge mistake. A lot more information needed before you make any changes.

    Here are the specs

    Silver grout

    Narrow grout lines.

None of your specifications are the the relevant one which is the cooefficient of friction. You can believe math or you can believe anecdotes and personal preference.
