Help? Should I lighten the mortar/grout lines with acid or paint?

Need to update and help blend this fireplace into our MCM farmhouse home. The walls will be BMs Oxford White to match with the white kitchen uppers. And the flooring is imitation walnut waterproof laminate. I want to put a thinner stained wood mantel as well? Thoughts? Any suggestions on how to lighten the mortar or even suggestions for the fireplace are welcome.

Well, if you are a fan of MCM, I'd leave it as is. It seems authentic to the era. If you want a more farmhouse look, I'd see if you can panel over the stone and cover it completely. Honestly, on the spectrum of ugly stone fireplaces I've seen posted on Houzz, yours is one of the least offensive. Maybe once you have belongings in the room you will like it as is.

MCM homes had always statement FPS I have a huge one 10' wide 4' deep and 8' tall I honestly thought I would cover it in concrete when I first saw it now it is my faveorite part of the space . I like yours it is simple adding a thicker mantel would be my choice if you want a mantel. Get a fabulous piece of art hang it on the FP and leave it for now. You are just moving in I really always say live there with all your stuff for awhile before doing anything to that .
