I think track lighting systems are a good, budget friendly solution in situations like this.

I also just found out you can add track like pendants above the islands. Never saw that before. But I’d hate to have to rip up our ceiling.

Surface mount track light is super flexible and could get you pendants over your island. However, if your flooring is continuous under your island it's worth squaring it up so it's just a step away from your work centers.

I just had discs put in my basement, they are a great problem-solver for tight spaces. The electrician said some people complain about glare, but I'm not really down there much to be a good judge of the amount of glare. Just mentioning as something to be aware of -- try to see them on display first.

I saw those but the electrons said that our joists go in the wrong direction and it would be like $2K to our just a couple in. I’m not sure if that’s a good price or not but I thought it was kind of high.

@Tara L Don't feel like you're missing out if you can't do some kind of recessed light situation. Personally, I think they'e overrated and give off terrible light.
