Ideas on creating buffer between drywall and HVAC

Recently moved into a new construction home. A few months ago, we started noticing a loud banging/popping noise in our walls during and after the heat would run. We brought this up to our builder. They said the noises in the wall were normal and left it at that. So, on a weekend when it was really loud, we tore out the drywall where the popping/banging/knocking was loudest and noticed the runs are sitting right up against the drywall. There is no room for them to expand and contract. Since removing that section of the drywall, the noises have mostly gone away. Before we put up the drywall back, we want to make sure there is a buffer between the drywall and runs. Any ideas on what we could do?
