I wouldn't consider any variegated dogwood tolerant of much sun........especially midday to late afternoon sun. The open shade position would be much better.

tbh, no dogwoods in my climate are very sun tolerant. And I live in a very cool summer climate - anything over 85F is a major heat wave. These are by nature woodland understory trees so a woodland or partially shaded setting is preferable.

gardengal, thats good to know. What are your thoughts on variegated cornelian cherry? Would that also be as sun averse? I am trying to find a variegated large shrub or small tree to add some interest.

LOL!! Now I am going to have to eat my words.😖 I agree cornelian cherry, Cornus mas, is very sun tolerant. Certainly much more so than Chinese or eastern dogwood. But I would still exercise caution with the siting of any variegated forms. Hot afternoon sun and the lack of chlorophyll in the variegation can lead to scorching and discoloration.

Reversing the setting - morning sun and afternoon shade - is close to an ideal situation. Much less sun stress.

zone is only low estimated winter temp.. its doesnt give us enough info otherwise... are you in TX.. FL...AZ ... PNW..etc.. you can see it might make a difference...
