how would you update this living room?

I want to brighten up the space while making it more minimal & modern. Plans to remove the built in, but this window needs something to anchor it. Also replacing the flooring, painting walls. Open to color suggestions as well.

More lamps! Cool space with good bones tho.

That's quite a window. With the built in gone--clear to the electric fireplace..could you re-orientate the room so the seating backs are to the window? We need to see more of the space.

Are you sure you want to remove the built-in? You will still need a place for the tv and all the components. It might look better with plain doors over the middle section and then simple decor on top.

If your budget allows, I'd consider replacing the window as well. What kind of fireplace is that? It doesn't look like it's got a flue. I'd reconfigure that entire wall if possible.

You'd get better advice if you showed photos of the entire room, and added a dimensioned floor plan.

First, remove the builtin and the fireplace. They’re making the room cave-like.

Then paint the walls a very VERY light color. (The current paint is sucking all the light out of the room.) Not necessarily white but maybe a minimal touch of the color of your choice.

@User what you see of the window is all it is, a high eye level up window.

@Diana Bier Interiors, LLC probably not enough budget to replace the window, but we will consider as it would drastically improve the openness.

@arcy_gw the left wall out of view is floor to ceiliing sliding doors to the patio & pool. The far wall under the window is the only place where a TV can go. I would like to remove the built-in but somehow still anchor that high window.

It depends on your budget, but I think you could work with the wall unit and even the carpet. Painting will probably change the look dramatically.

If you remove the built-in and fireplace, replace the flooring with a light colored wood ( no gray), and paint the walls a neutral color ( no gray) your problem will be solved. You can then do the fun stuff of arranging furniture, adding art, etc. Please come back and show the ” after”!

Can you show a photo with a view directly looking at the window but centered? The angles and perspective is throwing me off.

Will the sofa fit under the window center panel? Can you measure that panel and the sofa? I'm wondering if placing the sofa under the window, combined with some color choices would "anchor" the window. What do you think?

Will the fireplace also be removed along with the built-in?

I'll answer here instead of on the duplicate post you wrote asking the same question. First thing is to get three quotes on the cost of replacing the window. It might be out of your budget for the time being but it is best to really know what you are dealing with. Perhaps you will be swayed to remove it. If it is still out of reach financially then do as others have said - remove the cabinets but replace them with shelves that run along the wall under the window. Paint shelves and all of your walls the same color. New floors.
