second story window boxes

Hi all,
Wanted to get opinions on second story window boxes. See pics attached with a mocked up version I did. If yes, white or black window boxes? The white in the picture would match the house. Thanks!

It looks nice. But practically might be a headache to maintain.

I like the white over the black.

    Lovely house!

I vote no. No window boxes. Difficult to water (every day!) and then the water runs down the house. Hard to keep the plants looking nice. And do you know how heavy they are when filled with wet dirt?

And then some people put in fake flowers which look really bad.

I like the idea and I would do black. I'd see if you can find some more contemporary looking boxes that don't have corbels. A little too ornate for the clean lines of your house.

I think either color would look fine. Big help, huh? :D

I’ve had window boxes on every house I’ve ever lived in, and love them — even liking how they look when sometimes empty.

I’ve never found them to be the nightmares always described on this board.

I think when you water there is a chance of that dirty water dripping out onto the white siding so IMO no window boxes and if you insist then I would do the black

I think the black boxes look better.

Guess they would be a headache to maintain, but they do look good.

And they give the upstairs windows a better visual size.

I'd do black and only on the white siding portion of the house. I have copper window boxes on a white board and batten house. The windows are above the porch, so, high. I bought artificial flowers which, since the boxes are high and my ground level plants are live, look real. Win win.

No windows boxes. Too much work.

Why do you want to screw up perfection? The front facade is perfect as is.

    Hard no.

I like the black ones better. I will say I had only upper window boxes in my last home, and I love them. Worth every penny and I can’t tell you how many times people stopped and commented how lovely the house looked. Are they work? I guess but I did not mind tending to them. I knew that they had to be watered every third day and I made sure it was done. Not a big deal.

Hard no on black boxes. Because black absorbs heat, because the amount of soil in a window box is small, relatively means that the soil will overheat & roots will cook and plantings will struggle if the doesn't outright kill them.

I learned this lesson with medium teal colored window box that received only partial day full sun during comparatively mild Wisconsin summers.

I am an avid gardener and retired. I have had window boxes several times and finally gave them up. Water runs off them and will stain your house. They are a lot of mess and work to replace plants - there's no way to do this without making a mess. Looks like you would be watering and replacing plants through your window? Replacing the plants is expensive too. If you go away for a few days in the summer, everything will die.
