updatedSize for baby quilt?

Baby is expected in early June and I'm busy thinking about colors, block patterns, and sizes. Actually I think the planning is my favourite part of quilting. Colours have been decided on and I found THE perfect piece of fabric for the back in my stash. Its 27" x 45" and 30-40 years old* so no chance of finding another piece. Lately I have been making baby quilts a bit larger than 30" X 30".

What say you?

Is 27" before seams for the backing just too narrow? It would be a rectangle to compensate. I guess I could put a border on the back too 8~(

* fabric is sturdy enough despite age. It's mostly white but that's another question for another day.

That sounds too narrow to me. I was going to suggest what you said - add a strip of coordinating fabric to one or both sides of the back. I usually add either to only one side or two obviously different widths so that I dont have to worry about the backing being centered.

It does seem a bit narrow to me. How about adding a strip to each side to frame it?

I like Donna's and Beverly's suggestion to add a bit to the backing. Twenty-seven inches does sound too narrow to me also.

Twenty seven inches was indeed too narrow. Quilt was finished and shipped off last week. Babys parents called when it arrived today and sounded delighted.
