What's you recent experience with whirlpool washers?

I'm in the market to replace a HE4T which was apparently a rebranded whirlpool. I see LGs are very popular, but flawed by the water-hammer problem sometimes. And Miele's have their constituency. Do you have any stories to share of recent (say, since 2020 or so?) experience with a Whirlpool washer?

TY!!

I'm currently in an apartment building built in 2020 with Whirlpool front load washer & dryer (stacked). Looks like they don't make my model anymore. It's visually similar to WFW560CHW but mine has load & go and an on-board heater/steam. The clothes come out clean overall, but the machine itself is garbage. Build quality is meh (lots of plastic); it's loud; occasionally has to be unplugged to reset the computer; and cannot balance a load to save its life. Sometimes I'll watch as it tries to balance a few times, and it will have a smooth one that it abandons then chooses to go with a way less balanced one. It's not just my machine either. Sitting in my apartment or walking down the hall, you can hear and feel everyone else's unbalanced loads in their final spin, like a helicopter. I can't imagine this will bode well for longevity of springs, rubber gasket, etc.

I also find the "intuitive controls" to be anything but. With the buttons, you have to make 2 selections and then customize from there. It even lets you make silly combinations like delicates (what to wash) and heavy duty (how to wash) which defeats the purpose. A dial is much better in my opinion, and saves a step.

Anecdotally, my friends have the next model up WFW5605MW or WFW6605MW in their condo (also built around 2020), and it is a bit quieter and their spin cycle seems to be smoother (it does have the better vibration control feature). But they've also had a tech out 3x for service as it keeps burning through control boards.

I had an LG front loader in my last house and it was far superior, and my clothes were cleaner/fresher. The other Whirlpool appliances in this apartment are surprisingly good, but I don't see any compelling reason to buy a Whirlpool washer, especially when prices seem similar to the LG lineup.

Whirlpool, of course, has continued to produce and offer several frontloading washer models. The mechanical design has changed since the initial Whirlpool Duet and Kenmore HExx introduction in the early 2000s (there was also a KitchenAid version, Whirlpool bought KitchenAid in 1986). Whirlpool has owned Maytag since 2006 (KitchenAid laundry was discontinued at that time) and produces the same current frontloader designs under the Maytag brand, with variations in features and the user control interface. My neighbor bought a Maytag MHW5630 and matching dryer recently, with rotary knobs for cycle selection and touchbuttons for temperature, soil level, spin speed, and other options. It doesn't have the "What to Wash - How to Wash" panel that's on some Whirlpool machines. it does have a boost heater that activates on some cycles, I believe via a Power Wash button in center of the rotary knob.

Interesting. Any feedback on how your neighbor likes that Maytag washer model? Looking at its specs just now, it it appears to have good volume for fitting in larger loads.

I checked w/him yesterday evening. He said he had washed a London Fog "trench coat" type of jacket on the Bulky cycle (I don't know the specific settings beyond that) and it came out great.

Knowing your neighbor, I imagine he selected the default setting for Bulky, which you can see with the online user manual.

Whirlpool owns KitchenAid, and the quality is pretty bad. All of our kitchen appliances are KitchenAid, and we have a KA Wine Cooler in our WIne room. The only KA appliance we have not had problems with is the Wine Cooler. Yesterday I had to replace the Top Rack adjusters (with the help of a YouTube video) on our dishwasher. The performnace of the DW is superior. The quality is infuriating. I recommend you carefully research anything made by the Whirlpool corporation.

Wow, thanks. Seems that whirlpool has changed in the couple decades since we acquired our much-appreciated machine. It hasn't been trouble-free, but it is the devil I know. I seem to have worked out a temporary stay on its demise, not sure how long it will last. If it goes soon, I can see the LG seems to be a better candidate these days. I appreciate the feedback!

One of my aunts has a 2nd-generation Whirlpool Duet set (bought in 2012, model-series is 2010). The washer's motor board went bad in mid-2018. We DIYed the repair, no trouble since. No trouble or repairs with the dryer thus far.

@aliris19, I just wanted to second the recommendations of others. Your machines are a really good set and offer better water levels and cleaning than most models you can find on the market today. Spending money on spare parts and repairs would honestly be my first choice considering the circumstances.

I actually have a Duet HT myself, from 2005. It has extremely light usage and was a part of a second home, where it was preserved almost perfectly. I decided to grab it, knowing I would never be able to find another one like it, and I purchased an array of spare parts, which should allow me to keep it in operation for decades if I wanted.

The newer Whirlpool Machines certainly do not have the quality, that they used to. I also think, that your machine was actually manufactured in Germany, which, if correct, would be a wholly different ballpark of Quality compared to today.

One more thing, worth mentioning. Unless you purchased a Top-of-the-line Miele Little Giant, you would use lose a LOT of capacity that you are used to, with your Duet. I would only purchase a Miele Front Loader today if I am being honest. I just don't like the other options I see being presented.

I refurbed a 2006 Duet pair in 2012 for my neighbor who bought them used for placement at one of his rental properties that requires a stacked set (in a corner of the kitchen). The dryer needed some general cleaning, no repairs. The washer had been abused, full of smutz, the bearings and pump were bad. The drum spider was functional, not broken but suffering some deterioration due to the bad usage habits. I fully refurbed it with new bearings (not sourced from Whirlpool), new drum and pump. The set was put into use sometime in 2013 and have been used/abused by a succession of three renter families to-date. The washer has had no further repairs, although the current renters clogged the pump trap twice ... and the dryer has had several repairs (temp sensor and thermal cut-off, control board, blower wheel, heating element) under their usage (none with the first two renters).

After Whirlpool bought their main competition, they instituted their infamous 1-year warranty. They produce products to that standard.

When Ikea opened in the US they offered Whirlpool as their appliances. Ikea appliances all have a standard 5-year warranty. You can guess how this has worked out. Whirlpool has been dumped. Electrolux now supplies all Ikea appliances in the US.

The Whirlpool Neptunes are famous for having their bearings go out due to the speed they spin at. My newly purchased house happens to have a Neptune, so it came with it, but...

I do a lot of my own work at home, and am a mechanic of sorts, but even I will not replace the bearings on a Neptune Washer as they are just too involved for me to do. Other models maybe; but my time is more valuable to me then having someone else replace the bearing, or just buying a new one.

The Neptune frontloader line was developed and produced by Maytag, introduced in 1997. They were never branded as Whirlpool. The first model was MAH3000. Then MAH4000, MAH5500, MAH6500, and MAH7500. Maytag sourced a few Neptune frontloader models of a different design from Samsung (MAH6700, MAH8700, MAH9700). There was also two Neptune TL models (FAV6800, FAV9800) produced by Maytag for a few years, which is a toploader of a unique mechanical design (I have one).

Whirlpool took ownership of Maytag on 4/1/2006 and shut down Maytag's laundry production facilities in Oct 2007. Maytag's first washer was introduced in 1907. The 100-year anniversary was 2007. Whirlpool produced a Centennial Maytag model in Oct 2007, which was a Whirlpool-design toploader.

My neighbor had a MAH6500 with serial number April 2006 which surely was at the very end of production. I did one repair on it some years ago (control panel). He replaced the machine a couple months ago.

Regards to spin speed, the Maytag-built Neptunes are 800 RPM, 1000 for the MAH7500. The Samsung-sourced units are 1000 to 1200 depending on which model. Whirlpool's early Duet for comparison was 900 to 1100.

(edited to correct Neptune TL model numbers)

dadoes, I bet you have a formidable collection of brochures, sales lit, owners manuals and service manuals for many manufacturers of washers, dryers and other appliances. Those of us washer nerds could probably spend hours with your material and still not see it all.

We purchased a house in 2010 and sold in 2021. All of the appliances were Whirlpool built. No issues except a seal failing in the dishwasher after 7 years, bearings going out in the Duet after 10 years of hard use, the microwave handle had a trim piece fall off, and one of the fridge plastic door 'racks' shattered after dropping it. Everything still functioned great otherwise. Because of this, I am more likely to be a repeat customer for Whirlpool, but their quality has declined quite a bit.

I am currently living with relatives, and they have a Maytag MVWC565 washer (Whirlpool built) and it is OK at best. It is only 8 months old and I swear I can hear the plastic gears making noise. Low quality.

I don't mind the matching dryer though.

The beloved vintage two-belt Maytag toploaders had a plastic gear in the transmission. The spin gear in Whirlpool direct-drive transmissions (design produced from 1981 through approx 2012) was always plastic.

I bought Whirlpool front loader in 2018 (or maybe 2019) , having had good luck with them previously. I know the newer machines are quite different from the ones people bought in 1985 or even 2000 for that matter. I have a washer and dryer.

    So far, so good.

Whirlpool washer died in one year. The place I bought it from would not cover the warranty. Finally after hours on phone got a whirlpool person who sent a repairman out who told me what was wrong HOWEVER Parts are NOT available and no idea when parts will be available It's only a sensor yet there are NONE available and now i can't get ahold of whirlpool by phone or email,

My 2011 Whirlpool WFW97hex have an electronic failure and would't go to igher spin speeds. I replaced it with an LG front loader October/November 2021 and really like it.

HU-836012760, repair services may have a contract with a particular part supplier. Have you researched to confirm the required part is on backorder, not immediately available from any sources?

  • last year

ok I know that machines for sale today are not the same as those we have from a few years ago, but just to update that my Whilrpool washer and dryer from 2019 have been behaving. I'm afraid to jinx it. I did have one thing with the washer and looked it up on youtube- and was able to fix it easily. Phew.

If I had to buy one today I have no clue what I would buy.
