The one thing I can say is that if you're talking about the center fixture in the foyer there is no way you want to replace that with a pot light. You need a chandelier that hangs down so it throws light across a wide area, lighting the stairs. If you can post a better picture that shows your current fixture in the space someone will let you know if the scale of the fixture is right. If it is, you measure it and then start looking for replacements that are roughly the same size, but an updated style. In order to get more specific suggestions we need to know what your style is: traditional, transitional, FL modern? Can you show us a furnished room such as the living room?

Chandelier for sure, but suggest waiting to choose until flooring/staircase are done/accessories are being considered, as you’ll want everything to be complementary. I will put a 4' wood chest next to the steps. In the recessed 40" wide area, I am looking at arched-top cabinetS. We want a casual and current look.

Now................look in. What does the REST of what is beyond this foyer look like? What do you want it feel like, look like. It's open to what space? Great room? Dining? Living room ??
