Katie - I think those snakes are very beautiful...I especially love the rat snake. :)

Katie - thanks for those interesting pictures! I have never seen those types of snakes, and I also like the rat snake a lot. Perhaps that hawk was near the bird bath and the bird feeder waiting for a meal to show up! It is supposed to be a good sign of the health of an environment if you see predators who are the top of the food chain, so our hawks are a good sign.

I just caught sight of the doe who has her fawns in our garden - the sun has been out for a few days now, so all of the plants are growing like crazy. She was nibbling on our camellia bush, which does not bother me - we have so many bushes & flowers bursting out right now. I was looking at her, when I saw a tiny head following her, and a spotted back protruding from the undergrowth. The fawn was also chewing a bit on the camellia - did not appear to be actually eating it, but I guess copying its mother. I just love watching them -

Well, our little 2 fawns are appearing every day now, and I can't seem to stop taking pictures of them (all through our bedroom window, so pardon the quality). Today, they were both fed by Mom, then she led them back into the bushes. However, one of them is always more adventurous than the other, and sure enough, it popped right back out of the bushes by itself, and drank out of one of our 2 ground level bird baths (which we put in years ago for the raccoons, so they would stop breaking into our basement through the cat door to get water). Then, it wandered over to the OTHER ground level bird bath, so see if that had better or different water. Shortly after this, the doe re-appeared and collected it.

Jackie, I love your deer photos! It must be such fun to watch the baby fawns. We have deer here but I haven't seen any with fawns. The deer mostly stay out in the woods and only come up around the ponds at night ( we see their droppings)

Thanks. I know people HATE deer in their gardens, but since we live so close to downtown (they walk down the sidewalk & cross in the crosswalks to get here - I have seen them), we only usually see one at a time, and we have so much greenery I don't mind the nibbling. The doe eats the new shoots of English ivy, so my DH does not have to mow it. She also mows the oxalis into a neat carpet, so it does not shade out other plants. When the fawns get big enough, the does usually take them away to somewhere else.

Since we moved here 30 years ago, we have had 1 or 2 fawns born on our (1/3rd acre) property every other year or so. The does hide them in the undergrowth, and then visit them only at feeding time. My DH was very startled right after these 2 were born - they were so tiny they fit under the top of the ivy in an overgrown part of our property (near his car), and they popped out of cover right in front of him one day when he unsuspectingly disturbed them.

The fawns are cute, but I don't want deer in my backyard. There are many expensive hostas and heucheras and such back there, and I don't want them turned into a deer buffet. Hence the fence. Your lizard is a five lined skink, very common in NC. Cute little guy, and useful eater of bugs!

Jacqueline, that’s amazing about deer being born in your yard! I live near the Angeles National Forest so we see lots of wildlife when going for walks. Our tiny postage stamp yard is well fenced so only birds, lizards and squirrels make it back there. Otherwise we see plenty of coyotes, deer, rabbits, ravens, owls and hawks. Plus the occasional possum, raccoon and skunk. Once we saw a tarantula and also a bobcat. The neighbors regularly post Ring footage on Nextdoor of bears and cougars. Plus many threads about rattlesnake removal and we have a local retired herpetologist that will relocate rattlesnakes for free because he love snakes. I love living near the wilderness.
