If there is black in your backsplash, I think the black would look good. If not, I'm not sure. I think a more contemporary would be longer slender handle as opposed to a knob.

Oil rubbed bronze might work better with your countertop and backsplash. It gives you a dark look but not as harsh as flat black.

IMO the backsplash needs to be done and in s amll space keep finishes to a min. so stainless pulls are great please remove the fan and get a nice light fixture there and make sure all the bulbs in all the fixtures are LED 4000k
