Leaves Falling Off Goldsturm

I’m completely at a loss as to why leaves are falling off my Goldsturm shortly after it breaks dormancy in the spring About 3 years ago I planted a starter and it did well. Every year since, I observe it breaking dormancy in the Spring and start to feel optimistic about the upcoming growing season. The roots must be healthy as there seems to have been spread by runners. Without fail, I find leaves lying on the ground. There are no black spots and I can’t tell if there are bite marks. This year I decided to operate under the assumption it might be attack from slugs or snails and I’ve been applying Corry’s. I feel like this has been a wrong assumption as I’m again noticing fallen leaves. Any suggestions??

without pix.. its all speculation..'

NO PLANT HOLDS IT LEAVES FOREVER.. the oldest leaves are always shed.. usually in fall.. and sun light declines.. but after winter in a close second period ...

and its usually the interior leaves that are getting shaded out by annual new growth ...

if it were exterior damage.. after winter.. then it would probably be winter damage ...

if you want further analysis.. we would need a couple pix...

Slugs or snails would eat the leaves, not leave them lying around. It sees likely that some creature would account for this but I'd look to something larger - chipmunks, squirrels, crows or other birds.........

So, the top photo and the middle photo are examples of where the plant leaves have fallen off. The bottom photo represents what the other 2 had looked like about a week ago. The leaves falling off without explanation in the Spring is what I’m talking about. I don’t expect a perennial like this to stay green through the winter.
