There really is "no law" that says the legs must be on the rug. It can look just as well off the rug.
It looks like you hv ample space to put the front of the legs of both the sofa and chairs on the edge of the rug and have easier access to the coffee table. You need to pull the chairs away from the wall.
No problem with the piano stool. You can store it to the left of the piano when not in use.
It fits fine and very nice rug by the way.

If I could just offer my humble opinion - I prefer the Ed o e you were trying out. It just seems to brighten the space up, picks up on the color of the chairs, fireplace and piano, and offers really nice co trust to the sofa. The more muted one, to me, is a bit quiet and seems to take away from the drama of some of the other pieces.

That's "I prefer the red one" - brain getting ahead of my fingers!

I prefer it too....it's pretty pricey though. God help me if I change my mind about it a few years! I guess this is a resounding "no" to the diamond remnant, huh?

you'll have many posters telling you what they think is best but is is mostly a reflection on their taste.
And if this continues there will never be a conclusion.
You need to act as the chairman of the board listen to all the advise and then make your own wise decision which you feel is right for you and your family. Then move forward.

Well, turns out it's not quite a square. It's 12.5 by about 13.2. The fireplace juts out though on one side and the piano is on the other to cause problems.

The more I look a the room the more I think that the rug is too small for it would it be possible to take it out and use it in the dining room instead? Get a larger one for there , it looks good on front of the sofa but not on front of the piano ,move it a bit more to share it and compensate that space.

The piano stool thing bothers me and since you brought it up...probably you too....just keep in mind that YOU live in the space...if you dont love it...it is not fashionable for you . :)

I hope those tired by this conversation have turned off their notifications by now. My gut reaction is to move this rug elsewhere or sell it - I'm either of tired of it or it's simply not the right size for this room given the existing furniture arrangement. I'm going to investigate getting something cut and bound and hopefully a little more contemporary (but not crazy) and something to scale. The entire room is littered with very bold, abstract art - I'm hoping IT will be the real attraction, not the rug!

Go with your gut...you live in the space...if something bothers you or is not quite right,,,fix it.

Having a rug cut and bound is quite a bit cheaper too. This one is carpeting by Shaw - Heatwave, color Raindrop. Would work with your chairs (I think) and show up nicely on hardwood. Lets artwork take centre stage, for sure!

Well, I'm happy to hear I'm not irritating everyone and also happy to hear some of you find it interesting! I feel the current rug isn't working in there so I'd like to start from scratch. The Persian is indeed nice but it's not perfect and as I've said many times, terribly expensive. Surely to God, I can find something that works without spending a pot!

Do you feel that a quieter rug, with maybe texture but neutral color, is what you want? Do you prefer Persian? Are you looking for something contemporary? Are you interested in the current wave of dhurries and flat weaves that are so popular right now? Are you looking to pick up on the color in the chairs?

I'm thinking something more contemporary but not too trendy. Something with a pattern that's not too overwhelming, maybe even something that reads as a solid? And, of course, there's got to be contrast between the furniture and the rug and given the fact the chairs are olive green and the sofa is cream, not as easy to accomplish.

Well, I *may* have the found one but I have to wait until my daughter gets home with the IPad before I can show you guys. I know it's not going to appeal to all of you - no big surprise! It's so nice to be able to try a rug before committing and this is why I had such great hesitation going with something custom. It's made in Iran and is 60%. Oh, and it's also a square.

You know, I'd say that's a keeper - it's about perfect! Picks up chair colors, holds its own in the space, contemporary like you wanted, doesn't compete with the art. And I like that its a square rug with a square motif - brilliant!

I also like how the geometric design in the rug p,ay off the round/curvy shapes in the rug.

I like the ethnic feel of the rug and keep that piano bench......much more eclectic than a plain black one!
