@User What is overkill? Do you mean 3/4 is or more than?

3/4 thickness is standard for a wood cabinet door. If you want to PAY more? There's no advantage other than brag money. jmho.

Add that design in kitchens , other than upper cabinets, storage is best as drawers on low cabinets. Only a sink base is really convenient with doors.

You haven't said door style, look of kitchen or anything else that would suggest you need more than 3/4

I am wondering what the reasoning is behind having thicker doors?

I have built kitchen cabinets that were untraditional, I even built a timber framed set of kitchen cabinets once, so I am not opposed to the idea, but I have never done ones with thicker doors. I even thought long and hard of all the cabinets I have built, but all had the same 3/4 thick doors.

I am not sure about @JAN MOYER 's suggestion of "storage is best on drawers on low cabinets, Only a sink base is really convenient with doors" as that has not been my best experience at all. But maybe with a brevity of words there is confusion there?

Could you tell us why you are considering thicker doors? We might agree, or we might have work-arounds to what you want, or need to avoid?

It is a dixon measuring contest, and that is it. It is a waste of money and resources, with zero benefit.

It depends on the style of the door. Some very ornate styles will require a thicker door. What style are you considering?

I think we need a bit more info. As for drawers for lowers they are so much better for everything including glassware You do not need to get on your hands and knees to find anything and everything in the drawer is there to see in one instant. I even like the drawers under the sink that you can get now since anything bigger than a small garbage can and small compost are all that is needed. there too.

I had them in another home that i have (2 adults with 4 kids under 12) and it did not work out that well for us. I will admit that it was a fairly big kichen at 24 x 24 so we never were pressed for storage room. Maybe that is why? Or maybe i just like cabinet doors?

With mugs, i always used hooks under the overhead stuff so that kids and as well as adults could grab them without fuss. i never thought it looked bad but admit i have a ”everything must match” fetish. 😀😀😀

I cant wait to start my new kitchen though as i am sure everone will be of help. Only 16 x 24, but its such a gut job we are even going past the studs! No hyperbole there, we really are.

Drawers all the way. Was just at my daughters apartment for 9 days and hated having to get down on hands and knees to dig out pots, pans and tupperware. I also hated trying to put a stack of plates up into the cabinet.

In case of a leak, the drawers are easy to remove. One of the best things we did in the kitchen.
