Living with jute rugs?

Hi all, I am considering some gorgeous hand-made jute/wool flatweave rugs from a company called From Jaipur With Love: https://fromjaipurwithloverugs.com/shop-the-collection/

Though they're well-priced for rugs hand-made by artisans in India, and particularly as compared to pure wool rugs, they are not cheap (>$2k for the size I'd need).

My concern is that there seems to be a LOT of different opinions on durability, stain-resistance, cleanability, etc. for Jute and really lots of natural fibers. This will be a family room that will be used daily in a household with a dog but no children (though children visit from time to time). It's not a pass-through, so not high-traffic. There is a door to the patio, but it will probably not be frequently used as there are other doors to the same space. Food will be eaten in here on occasion, but this isn't a dinner in front of the TV household. Entertaining will happen, but no big cocktail parties with red wine sloshing around.

So basically, it's a space where spills or a pet accident certainly could (and at some point, life being what it is, will) happen, or someone could track mud in, but not an area where that is likely to occur on a regular basis.

Is jute an acceptable material for this type of space? Has anyone successfully removed liquid stains from jute? Would a wool/jute blend be a safer bet, or will it just be spending more money for the same issues? Or should I just go all-wool?

I have experimented with indoor-outdoor rugs in the past to avoid these issues, but I have not been happy with how they wear. I really prefer the look of a flatweave rug to a tufted.

Copying some images below of wool/jute options - in some the materials are interwoven, in others the wool is a motif within jute (if that makes a difference).

Speaking from experience, there is no worse combination of natural fiber rugs and pets.

The stains often can never be removed. I have tried jute and sisal. The only way to clean them is using a dry method because water weakens the fibers.

The only thing I never tried was spraying the rugs with Scotchguard or some type of waterproofing spray in an effort to offer protection PRIOR TO PLACING THEM ON THE FLOOR.

IMPE, indoor/outdoor flat weave, or bamboo rugs are much more practical with kids and pets. You can steam mop them too.

My one jute rug experiment is upstairs - in the attic. I found it impossible to keep clean -and vacuuming was a nightmare. Without shoes or socks, they are often uncomfortable to walk on. I see them in lots of magazines but having tried to live with one, I would vote a huge “no”.

RedRyder Thanks for your insight! We wear house shoes and guests keep their shoes on, so the underfoot feel is less important. But I hear you on the dirt and vaccuming!

carolb_w_fl_coastal_9b Thanks! I actually have tried indoor-outdoor flatweaves from a couple of different manufacturers (Annie Selke and Ralph Lauren). While they can be hosed down and almost entirely stain-free, my experience was that the fibers pretty quickly start to fray/fuzz in the higher use areas and they get dingy. Not familiar with bamboo rugs but will look into them. No kids here, just a dog!

Do you want to know what rug is my absolute favorite in my home? The wool and jute rug! It is so soft on bare feet.

I have an 8 x 10 in my family room and a 3 x 9 runner in front of my sitting area.

They have both weathered what life has thrown at it for 10 years and the runner is in my main traffic path straight through my home!

We can lay on it and play with the dog because it is that soft.

It’s the best of all worlds! So I MUST recommend this one 🙂"
