Sectional or two couches?

New house with a pretty big living area. I always planned a big sectional with 2 side chairs, but I’m seeing more people using 2 full size couches. We are very informal people, so the sectional may be more appropriate for our lifestyle. Thoughts?

This is a question that ultimately only you can decide based on your needs, decor style, room size, room set-up, etc.

We are empty nesters, and love having two matching sofas (and two side chairs) … this set-up suits how we use the room well. When we have guests, everyone has good options for seating, and when it’s just us, we each have our favorite sofa to lounge on. DH has claimed the side one — perfect for stretching out to watch TV. :)

Our fairly small living room can be seen from the foyer and I like how our two sofas (with sofa table behind one, table in between, both with lamps) look vs the large back of a sectional.

But again, various factors weigh in, and there’s no right or wrong, just what works best in your room.

It sounds like a sectional would work well for you; I’ve always found them very comfy for lounging, too. When I visit people who have them, I don’t find sitting next to others off-putting. Pillows are great for arm leaning and separation, it’s not like anyone has to sit in another’s lap … unless they want to, of course. :D

It completely depends on your floorplan dimensions and site constraints. Can you post a picture of the space or a floorplan? I lean towards sectional for informality, warmth and an inviting aesthetic, but without seeing your space, it's hard to know what would be best! Is there a focal point in the room, like a fireplace or TV? In this space we used a sectional so that one side faces the fireplace, while the other side faces the TV, and then we added arm chairs by the window to maximize window views/seating.

I’ve had both - large sectionals in large homes too. I like the look of them, certainly. I have a small one now in my home (I’m primarily alone or with an adult child visiting) and it’s great. But in my opinion and experience, even a large sectional can get too cozy with guests that you normally wouldn’t want to be that close to. In my other home, we switched to two large sofas and it feels better. Everyone has their own spot and the dead corner of the sectional is not an issue.

I have a sectional and wish I had gone with the two sofas. In my opinion you have more flexibility with the 2 sofas . The seat cushions on my sectional wear quicker in some spots because of tv viewing

It appears that a sectional might be ideal for you. Th versatility of the design also gives it a modern feel.

My daughter has a gorgeous sectional and when she invites us and friends over, I find it awkward. Who gets the corner? Go with the two sofas on angle, and two chairs.
