Another close up of stem. I read that the stems are spiney but it seems to just have hairs.

I think Barleria is correct. Where did you find reference to spines? I’ve never seen this plant myself but I can’t see spines in on line images or see reference to them in descriptions.

I agree, that is it. I have read so much about the plant. It can't survive our winter so I will put it in a pot and bring it into the sunroom with the rest of the jungle in the fall. Some where I read about spines but I think it was another plant in that family. Can't find the reference right now. Thanks for you all's help.

That's a pretty color. I have Barleria with scarlet flowers in my yard - it's weedy and annoying, but not too hard to pull. The flowers last only one day. The most annoying thing about it is it seems to shoot its seeds everywhere and they all sprout.

No spiny stems either.
