Feedback on Bathroom Design…

last modified: 3 years ago

I'm messing around with a design for my (very small) first floor bathroom…

Considerations:

  • I'm thinking navy blue tile for the sink wall, although I might just paint it to save money. I'm not sure it adds THAT much to the design (considering it would add $1000+ to the cost)
  • Mounted concrete sink w/ aged brass hardware (Concretti)
  • Aged Brass Rimmed Mirror (CB2)
  • Brass Sconce Light (Schoolhouse)
  • Terracotta paint for the two side walls
  • Wood shelves above toilet w/ aged brass mounting brackets (West Elm)
  • Brass Toilet Paper Holder (Schoolhouse)

Anyways, that's where I'm at. Any input or criticism is welcome. Thank you!

    Paint instead of tile…

I like your choices, but personally I'd want something with a bit of storage under the sink and room for soap by the sink. Maybe a small (shallow, narrow) floating vanity to keep an open feel.

This one is 24"w x 13" deep. Not sure if that's too big, but there are even smaller ones you can find and if you post a scale plan showing dimensions that will help people help you.

I love it! I prefer the painted wall rather than the tile. By cooincidence, I had just finished saving this photo because I was so taken by the color scheme.

I don't think you need a different paint color on every wall of a small bath. Pick two. I do like the combination of navy and terracotta. Does it relate to the rest of your house? While powder rooms are a good place to exercise some creativity I still think they should fit in with everything else. I like the idea of paint instead of tile because at some point you (or the next owners of your house) are going to want a change and paint is much easier to change.

The tiled wall is so beautiful and modern, and it does add THAT much to the design. Visual texture is always a win especially when done tastefully. The contrasting grout is also so beautiful. If you are concerned with the budget then start with the paint for now. You can always add the tile later. Mind you do some research on the tile, you might get a similar look but with a cost-effective tile such as Olympia CD Series (https://www.olympiatile.com/product/series/120/colour_dimension_series#809-denim). Also depending on how long you plan to live here... If it's a forever home I say go for it and live your best life with a beautiful tiled wall. If you plan on selling the home eventually, the paint is of course the way to go, as navy blue tile may not be an average person's cup of tea. Another suggestion is textured wall paper (like a grasscloth type)... I think the design is beautiful overall and you have very good use of color here.

@kandrewspa you can see the colors of the first floor here:

I would be matching the blue accent color from the dining area.

@chicagoans yeah, storage under the sink would be ideal. I'm dead set on one of those Concretti sinks! I just wish I could find a console that I could mount it to (the current one is 18x18). I really like this one from West Elm, but it's only 13in deep.

FYI the sink wall is 33in wide…

@VS Design Co wallpaper is a great idea as an alternative to the tile! I think that could add some nice texture and also it would be easier to change out later on if needed.

This is the tile I am considering:

@VS Design Co @kandrewspa here is a wallpaper I found (Burke Decor). Would it be too much to use the wallpaper on both the sink wall and toilet wall? See attached…

Here is my daughter's 1/2 bath, which was a closet 6' x 5.6'. Because it was a loft when the (ceiling) of the closet was removed, the space wound up with a 10' ceiling. This is in a city loft, so the decor isn't your home. Just want to show you what she did. Wallpapered all four walls. Added a concrete sink and base, made and shipped by a vendor on etsy. Because of the tight space, the faucet had to go on the side. Sink is deep. She covered the sink wall with a full mirror and the two sconces hung from the ceiling.

Thanks for posting a link to your other post so I could see another part of your house. The blue and terracotta color scheme for the powder room makes sense. What were you planning on the wall with the door? I still think you should stick to two colors, so would the wall with the door be navy or tc? I don't know if I love having the blue on non-adjacent walls broken up by the terracotta unless the wall with the door is also blue. That turns the terracotta wall into the accent wall. If you use wallpaper instead of paint for the blue walls it seems like you have both the wallpaper and the tc wall competing for attention in a small bathroom.

@kandrewspa I was thinking it would also be terracotta…

@kandrewspa are you thinking the angled area of the ceiling should also be terra cotta like this?

Or I could ditch the terracotta and just leave it Accessable Beige like the rest of my first floor…

This would be all wallpaper, but I feel it might be too much…

This!!!! This is perrrrffect - add some artwork on the wall opposite the door, ideally something to echo the accessible beige colour from the rest of the home.

I see a great opportunity for fun wallpaper!

Is another light fixture above toilet necessary? Feel like you could do without.

Rather than open shelving above toilet, how about storage cabinet?

I’m not wild about the terracotta wall color with the tones of the wood floor. I believe you have it right with the blue tones!

@susanschultz83 im actually scaling back a little and doing a vanity in the same spot. Doing wallpaper everywhere.
