Very confused here. What does fourth generation have to do with your dilemma?

Are you going to share you home with grandparents? Or are you the grandparent?

Where to set our furniture. The room is shaped funny. We were thinking about black and white paint. Black as an accent point up to the ceiling.

What about a safari theme suggests black walls to you? It's possible to have a black accent wall without overwhelming a space, and maybe I don't understand what you're considering, but here's a room where they used one black wall. The use of white with it keeps it from being too much.

I agree with la_la girl…..focus on a rug, piece of art or couch and build design from that. We have seen this problem in another recent post where owner was trying to design around a wall color. Wall colors can and will change over time. Start with an investment piece (rug, couch or art for the wall) and build. A rug is usually what people start with, but if you already have furniture you plan to use then look for a rug.
