Is this acceptable for interior window trim?

Hi everyone,

I am trying to help manage the remodel of my parent's new home before they move up. We had a guy who was really recommended to us through family and he said he could do the interior window trim. Our painter let me know that his work was really subpar and that he could try to fill it with caulk, but that it wouldn't look good and he would be unhappy to have that kind of finished product. The windows had bullnose drywall around them.

I fully admit that I am not super knowledgeable about how it's supposed to the look before paint, but the guy who did the trim told me that he's never had issues except with this painter. But to be honest....after taking a close look at each window, I am in inclined to agree with the painter.

Please let me know if you think that the window case trim is within the realm of okay or am I being completely lied to. Photos below are of multiple windows. Some of the trim I was able to tug off with my bare hands.

It all needs to come out. None of what I see is in anyway acceptable.

It might help to remove the bullnose. There will typically be a buildup of joint compound which prevents the trim from laying flat.

The gaps aren’t I assume the nail holes will be filled, sanded and painted.

Oh that is unfortunate what has been done. Do not pay for that, and try to get a carpenter that knows how to do it right. The wood used isn’t even nice looking. Sorry this happened.

I always advise never ever to do any renovation work with family or friends, or take recommendations from family or friends. No matter what. The family/friends usually know no better than you do, and the recommendations are based on friendship, drinking buddy, being neighbors, high school classmate, or similar, not skills and abilities. Plus you may have ruined your relationship with the person who made the recommendation because it did not turn out well. Happens time and time again.

Thank you everyone for the input. I’m uncertain whether or not to allow the trim installer to ”fix” anything or eat the mistake and cost.

No offense...but please don't call the persons responsible for that abomination a "carpenter"

If he thinks that is acceptable work, I would very much hesitate on how he could possibly "fix" it. I would cut your losses now and move on from this "carpenter".

I once got a glowing recommendation from two people who said that the guy could "take a sketch from a napkin and build what you want from it".

It turns out that's what he could do. If you had a vague sketch and general idea of what you wanted, he could build something. If you had exact plans of how something was actually supposed to be built and expected it to be built accordingly, forget it.

The problem with referrals from friends is that they may have exceedingly low standards.

If the same individual would be coming back, I have my doubts. That said, without getting into all of the legal ramifications, it would be best to give him one chance to fix. After that, its one of those "fool me one time, fool me twice" scenarios.
