These washer drums (4.5 cu.ft. to 5.0 cu.ft or larger) do not compare to a 7.8 to 8.0 cu.ft. (or larger) dedicated dryer.

Since it is ventless and operates on 110v it does give more options for placement. The one video I watched said they did a king sized comforter in 2.5 hours, and a load of 8 bath towels in about the same. I’m considering options for my carriage house apartment. My big LGs in my house have a 58 minute regular cycle, plus about 60 minutes to dry. My current small(2 cu ft washer) washer dryer units that are in that apartment now have a bit of life left but probably will need to be replaced in the next year. Hopefully by then there will be real world reviews out there.

True, and that is a possibility. That does put the dryer controls over my head requiring a step stool to use comfortably. Not sure I have that much room in the area I’m hoping to use, the ceiling slopes down so will be measuring. I looked at the LG Washtower because it has all the controls around waist height and is about 74 inches tall and that was going to be a tight fit height wise.

Regarding LG washtowers - there are four washtower models and one does have a heat pump dryer. The model number is WKHC202HBA. LG's website says it is in stock for delivery. This is an interesting unit Haier is putting on the market. I must admit that their line of "your dishwasher also dries, so why not your clothes washer, too?" does kinda make sense. Still, I personally prefer separate units. Especially since this GE has a Sanitize with Oxi cycle, meaning that there's no water heater.

I've seen videos of the current top-of-the-line GE front loader and it's very underwhelming compared to the Electrolux, Samsung Bespoke and LG models featured on the same YouTube channels.

There have been single-drum washer-dryer combination machines on the market as far back as the 1950s, into the early 1970s. All the major manufacturers offered them. Bendix-Philco, GE, and Whirlpool-Kenmore were the most successful. Maytag had large problems with theirs and eventually bought them all back from the customers (except a couple known to have escaped). Most of the designs had condensing dryers, with water-based cooling/condensation being the common method which increased (cold) water consumption and would never fly nowdays.

Curious what the market in the US is for a unit like this. Seldom is there not space for some type of washer and dryer arrangement I believe, Whenever I have travelled to Europe, laundry appliances are considered more utilitarian than here, or maybe even Canada. It is so common to find them in a bathroom or kitchen, and there they are like a stove or a bathtub. That actually seems kind of healthy to me. The price seems awfully high for the average consumer.

I did see that video, but it looks like they are reviewing the release of the product info, but not the actual washtower. It says things like "the heat pump may be problematic". He states in the comments that he will do a video with an review once they have used the actual unit.

There were also gas versions of the Philco-Benix and Whirlpool-Kenmore washer/dryer combos.

When we moved to our new house in Houston in September, 1961, at one time in like 1962 or 1963, there were 3 houses on the street that I knew of that had washer/dryer combos--a Gas Lady Kenmore Combo, an electric Westinghouse Wash'n'Dry, and a Norge washer/dryer combo--cannot remember if it was electric or gas, only saw it once when I was like 8 or 9. .

@Whirlpool Trainee--the unit is based upn their low-end 4.9 cu. ft. model that doesn't have an onboard heater. When I saw Sanitize - Oxi, completely lost my interest.

Well, the product page does list an Extra Hot setting - but no Sanitize and/or Allergen cycle like other GEs.

By the way, the Samsung Bespoke models can also be stacked with the washer control panel doubling as a dryer control panel. Overall taller than the LG, of course.

Parts diagrams will reveal presence of a heating element in the tub, if diagrams are as yet available.

I have used an LG all-in-one combo unit, 4.5 cu ft model for almost 20 years and plan to replace it with the updated model when the time comes. It does take a bit of getting used to it but it is great once you do. Who cares how long it takes? I set it to come on while I’m at work and time it so it is finishing up when I get home. Never have to worry about forgetting wet laundry. This replaced a hulking washtower monstrosity.

Would getting 2 of these make sense if you had the room? I like the idea of not having to transfer clothes from washer to dryer. With 2, the 2 hour cycle would not be an issue.

@gardener123 That is really subjective to your personal laundry situation. If I had room, I might opt for a separate washer dryer (not a tower) but it would be a difficult decision because I am so used to the “set it and forget it“ convenience. And I can’t imagine having so much laundry that you would need two going at the same time - maybe a ton of kids? Know that a full wash / dry cycle can definitely take more than 2 hours. A full load of bath towels, hand towels, etc. on ”extra dry” is probably closer to 4 hours. But even then, you just get into the habit of putting a load in overnite and another load during the day while you are out.

@gardener123 There is a "no dry" option. I often do a "delicate" cycle (approx. 40-45 minutes) and air dry. And you also will learn that the time for a drying cycle can be a moving target as the unit continues to monitor the dampness throughout the cycle and adjust the time on the display. You can set a drying timer (e.g. 30 minutes, 60 minutes) or you can select "more dry" or low /gentle [? whatever it is called] ( there are other options, too) and it will show the drying time on the digital display, but it is really an approximation. I like "more dry" for towels, "low" for sheets / bed linens (I like to pull them out when still very very slightly damp for easier ironing), and no dry for delicates / hand wash. It is a small learning curve, and is only very occasionally a problem - you aren't going to get something to dry in 10 minutes - so you do need to be somewhat planned or organized.

GE uploaded the manual for the washer/dryer. It states:

Extra Hot will use 100% hot water from your water supply.

The Combo does not heat the water.
