First rose seedling

last modified: 3 years ago

I’m very excited to finally have a seedling! Other than planting the assumed mother-plant, Ray Ponton, I had no involvement in its germination. I planted Ray Ponton in a new raised bed in September 2022. It was the only rose of three to survive our unusually hard freeze in December. I first noticed the seedling in February. i have no experience with seedlings, but I think it’s growing well. It’s similar to Ray Ponton, but so far all the blooms have been pale pink and have fewer petals. Both roses are thornless except for harmless tiny prickles on the underside of the leaves. Both have a wonderful fragrance. I’m excited to watch it grow!

Photo taken today. Ray Ponton has sent up five basals since December. Hopefully its progeny will also be a strong grower.

First bloom in March.

I noticed the seedling for the first time Feb. 21. It’s peeking from under a bloom on the right. Garden Cat for scale.

Hips in December.
