Layout for living room/foyer

My living room/foyer is a two story, but has usable space at about 8ft by 16ft. The space in front of the door I consider a “walkway” to the family room, kitchen and dining room. I can’t figure out the right mix of furniture pieces (2chairs and coffee table, small sofa and 2 chairs, etc)? Any ideas about the size, mix of furniture pieces and furniture placement would be greatly appreciated?

I would make sort of a reading/quiet nook. Chances are you not going sit on a sofa there. I would would a comfortable chair and side table on a rug and hang the art

Think about your seating needs; how do you see yourself using this space. You could try an on line room planner, adding in the dimensions and test your ideas. Be sure to take advantage of the wall’s height to create interest and ground with a rug.

Could you post a picture facing that wall standing as far back as you can and remove chairs, Art everything except drapery. Then I can try some mock ups for you. You need vertical art not horizontal. You might be able to use a bench with a back and art above.

I misspoke. You need horizontal art. Or a pair that helps define the space at 9’ level. We view things from eye height which is about 60-65” from floor to center of art.

Here is one example. I tried to block chairs etc until I get a clean picture. I found this chair and thought a pair would create a cozy seating area with large art for this little spot.

Is this your only living room/seating area? May we have measurements of the room including doors, windows, walls, stair wall, and openings. That will help a lot. A hand drawn sketch works well. How many people use the room daily and how many guests do you want to accommodate? Will there be a TV in this space? Best Wishes

You should be able to fit a modest sofa and lounge chair in the area.

Why are the walls so pink/peach in undertone?

Put your vertical art on the staircase.

@BeverlyFLADeziner - not sure. It’s probably the camera. Thanks!

ktcheri- if you need a desk space you could put a small desk facing entry with art on wall behind and chair with interesting lamp as an option too. I would like to see your adjoining rooms too. That can help provide perspective on suggestions.

Something like this. I am assuming the living room is next and open to this space?

    This is the living room/foyer

Here is a hand drawing of the space - the area to the right of the dotted line is the walkway area.

Does the 8’ go to the walkway area or include the walkway? Usually need 3’ for walkways. That last picture really helps. It becomes more of a room and not a niche. But 8’ is narrow to work with. How do you want to use this space? Do you have a family room? Could this just be a reading room? A couple chairs, a couple bookcases and art?

Here is layout sketch (each square = one Sq. Ft. ). And mood board with potential elements.

What activities do you want to have happen in here, who will use it, and how regularly? Yes, you can make a sitting area, but will you really use it here or just gravitate to one of the other sitting areas in your house? Same with a book nook.

The 8ft goes to the walkway area. I didn’t include it in the measurements since it’s not useable. Since I have a family room, this room will be used as a sitting area.

Ok. Then my scale sketch works. Boils down the what you want for everyday enjoyment.

If you don't use that front door for every day going to your car then you could put a big round table there a picture on the wall you could have flowers there a plant and if you play games you could play a game at the Round Table

Thank you everyone for the great ideas. I’ll post a picture when it’s completed.

Love your work and design and pics, Flo! Always well done!

Halfway completed. Need lighting, some sort of table and a rug. I’m deciding on pillows either lumbar pillow that adds more color or my fluffy pillows which is more tonal to the chairs.

That looks cozy & calm & be great when done.

Here’s the latest iteration. I feel like something is missing along the way with the staircase. Not sure about the table either. Maybe a true cocktail table?

For me it looks a bit too staged, I would lean towards either larger armchairs with an ottoman for a real reading spot or keep those more upright chairs and add 2 more + game table

I'm bigger end table put it by the wall under the picture and add an ottoman cuz that don't look comfy enough for a reading Nook
