Can you paint mortar and what is that process?

Hi! We are moving into this brick home with red brick and red mortar. Can we “re mortar” this and what process would that be? I’m having trouble finding advice on how to lighten the mortar for a new look. I like the idea of some light color in between and maybe would make a new look. I don’t like the red on red. Alternatively, we used Romabio on our current house and love the opaque limewash look. But I’m exploring other ideas like painting the mortar. I just don’t know what to look for in a pro and what is involved so we can consider that route and cost. Thank you!!
