I really think he may be a climber. Last year he had 12'+ canes. We will consider moving one of the trellises from Lady in Red over to him. Lady in Red is not a climber but a ill mannered bush that dies to the ground every single year.

It was a rough winter for sure. For some of my roses, it was the first time they ever had any winter dieback at all. It was, at least, very educational, as I got to see which roses could still thrive after those temps. Nice to see your roses coming back.

Are your roses - from Easy on the Eyes on down - OR or grafted, mmmm?

I’m struck by how much bounce back these roses have already achieved in late May - in zone5 CO. That would not happen here in my yard in 6b-7aNJ. But mmmm‘s garden looks like all day sun for every rose, compared to 5 1/2 hours max (often less) here.

Rifis, all my roses are own root. All but two are from High Country Roses. I think they like being in the rocks in our climate as they seem to be healthy and do well there without alot of work on our part. The trimming of the dead cane in the spring is the worst of it. Other than that we only miracle grow once or twice a year but are going to try and get better with that and start doing in three times a year.

For got to mention Fourth of July. It actually looks pretty good this year. Maybe this is the year it will take off. Or maybe the Dr. Huey lurking in the soil near there is fooling me and pretending to by Forth of July.

Pretty Lady Rose(I have 3) is a favorite and is coming in nicely.

The Fairy is a 30 yr old plant that has struggled the last few years. Lots of die back this year.

Chuckles continues to struggle. Small and spindly despite being one we put in the first year we bought roses. I would take it out but don't have anything else that would do better. I tried Jack Frost Brunnera under this tree and it is barely hanging on.

Left side of the west bed around 11 a.m. which is when the whole bed gets to have full sun as it is on the west side of the house it is in the shade until the sun rises.

As the summer progresses the roses on the left side start to get more and more mid-day shade in addition to morning shade due to a tree directly south of them.

The conifers in the background appear particularly happy and robust.

MMMM, Did you have any snow cover on those roses? My Quietness with snow cover did well with 2/3 surviving cane length at -20 F. I don’t winter protect, but I bury the graft and own roots by at least 3 inches, usually 4 inches when I plant them. Glad to see you don’t have to replace dead roses. I think they did great.

Hi Rebecca,

I suspect not since everything but the three I mentioned in the original post died to the ground. Everything you see growing in the pics on the other roses came up from below. There was no surviving cane.

We have had a wet spring so that is probably why everything looks so happy and healthy. We only ran the sprinklers once to dewinterize them and then have had them turned off since then. That is a happy thing here in dry CO.

Winnipeg Parks is my first bloomer.

Robust also has a bloom.

Your roses are beautiful! My roses struggled this year (some died back to the ground, others around half the canes died). And even now they are nowhere near blooming yet; they still have tight green buds, which is very unusual. Normally they bloom in the first week of June! it has been cold and wet this spring, AND my back yard consistently blooms around a week and a half later than everywhere else around here, but it’s still a bit strange. My shasta daisies are July bloomers and I already have some buds that look like they’ll open pretty soon. In the meantime, I’ve still got lots of late spring flowers like irises, columbines and lupines blooming, so maybe it’s the daisies that are unusual this year, rather than the roses!

Almost all of my roses died back to the ground this year which is unusual so I was a little worried, but thankfully they all bounced back. Here are some portraits of a few of my favorites that are blooming (along with their companions).

Parade Day is becoming a favorite. Nice scent and just stunning when it is loaded with roses.

Neil Diamond is pretty but kind of wilty in our climate. It seems a little allergic to the sun.

Winnipeg Parks, as usual, is loaded with blooms. Winnipeg Parks may be my most prolific bloomer. She has needed dead heading at least 3 or 4 times this year whereas some roses are just starting to pop their first blooms.

Calico Gal has been an unexpected delight this year. Early bloomer and they keep coming.

Amiga Mia has been dribbling out blooms but has a ton coming.

Candy Land is just starting also.

Robusta has had the most flowers she has ever had for her spring flush. Also a very early bloomer.

Now that you mention it, I don't think I've ever taken full bush pictures of any of my roses. I'm apparently obsessed with portraits of roses ;-D I just popped out and took some of the the same 3 roses as above...

Pretty Lady Rose

Morden Blush is my absolute favorite rose! There isn't much of a fragrance, but the blooms are just so gorgeous; I think they look like heirloom roses (without requiring extra care). I'm a lazy gardener and don't fertilize anything, so I don't even try to grow anything high maintenance. This rose blooms pretty steadily from early-mid June through the fall. Here are a couple of photos taken in June of the first flush of blooms. My profile pic is also of a Morden Blush bloom (with a praying mantis on it).

And a couple taken on October 11th of 2020 with a few late blooms surrounded by fall colors...

I forgot to mention in my last post that I am in Colorado-- south of Longmont and east of Boulder (in Erie).

I really like Morden Blush! I've eyed it a few times at High Country Roses' green house. But not pulled the trigger due to our bed being full and I have so many pinks. I really need to add a yellow since I have none. :-)

I have only made it to a single spring swap when it was at a park in Longmont (I think was in 2010). Hopefully in a few years when I'm not shuttling teenagers around so much I can make it to another one :)

The Japanese Beetles are here so the roses are being cut for the indoors.

I picked up 5 new glass candy dishes from Nextdoor for $5. They really make a nice display.

I also have a couple of Fenton vases which I really like and the purple vintage vase with white flowers on it. Wouldn't mind getting a few more fenton and pretty vintage vases but the clear glass bowls are so practical for floating flowers and they look fantastic!
