That's definitely an odd-colored "Ball of Snow", lol. I'm not sure of your ID of VdB. The background color on mine is most often pure white. Where did you purchase this mystery?

@oursteelers 8B PNW Yours in its pink iteration looks remarkably like Elf's not-BdN. My VdB has never been quite that pink. Yours is lovely indeed.

It may come down to comparing leaves and habit. Ferdinand is a Hybrid Perpetual, VdB is a Bourbon. There should be discernible differences.

The rare rose cultivar: ‘Bowl de Peppermint’. The foliage looks Bourbon to me. Likely VdB. I think your rose blooms are too full for Honorine de Brabant. Carol

Thanks for all the comments about this mystery rose! I will try to get a decent photo of the whole plant, the habit is extremely awkward and leggy at the moment, but it seems to be quite vigorous. I got it from a local nursery that used to sell a small number of own-root roses propagated from their display gardens, so I could also dig back through their past inventory list to see if I can find any clues.

I quickly got some helpful results from going through inventory lists for the past 20 years (thanks to the Wayback Machine!). It looks like the nursery did propagate and sell both Honorine de Brabant and Variegata di Bologna. I don't think I know how to tell the difference so I'll be back with a photo soon. Too bad about Boule de Neige, but I can't say I'm disappointed, this is a pretty little thing and not something I already had in my collection!

I LOVE candy striped roses! :) Both HdB and VdB are classics. At least the nursery's mix up left something lovely at your garden gate. Hopefully, you will enjoy your striped Bourbon just as much as (or more than) BdN. Please do keep us updated with photos as blooms unfurl and time allows. Carol

Here are a few more photos - one flower is more cup shaped than the others, and the colors are slightly different. I couldn't get a good photo of the whole plant, but here's a pretty good photo of the foliage on the new growth - it's about 3 ft tall. I'm leaning towards VdB as the ID, but it's just an uneducated guess.

My VdB has growth like that but I’ve been bending it over to hopefully force more blooms. I want as many flowers as possible from you if you’re a once bloomer

@ElfRosa Hmmm. Now I’m leaning toward Honorine de Brabant. You’ll know in time because of the higher or lower petal count. In my experience, their habits and foliage are similar, except VdB was more prone to blackspot for me. As @oursteelers 8B PNW notes, VdB is pretty much non remontant. With maturity, HdB repeats. Both have great fragrance and exquisite striped and speckled violet-crimson-pink-white blooms! Even though HdB repeats, I’m in Oursteelers camp with the Bourbons. I like to arch their canes and maximize the number of blooms. Carol

I don’t grow either VdB or HdB now. I last grew Honorine but passed my plants along to Portland area John here on the forum. My Zephirine Drouhin above is wacked back because she needs to move to the edge of the bed, and then I intend to drape her over the top of an arch, the one that’s still sitting in an unopened box in my garage. But in case it helps you picture your young plant’s future habit, this photo illustrates how Bourbons generally arch their canes and break into blooms all along the canes. I guess we'll just see what my stripey little friend does! I was surprised when I took these photos that the flowers appear to be different shapes. I have quite a few Bourbons (including ZD) but they all have very different habits

@portlandmysteryrose I troed to get a picture showing the arching canes but my geranium really covers them up. I can only post three at a time so hopefully you can get the idea

@oursteelers 8B PNW She’s lovely! (Your whole garden is lovely!) Thank you for the pics. I am so glad you grow VdB. I have a real fondness for her! How is her disease resistance in your neck of the PNW?

@ElfRosa That’s wonderful that you have several Bourbons, including Zeph, already! That explains how you quickly identified yours as a possible VdB. Which others do you grow? I soooo have Bourbon envy! They are a blackspotty bunch in my area, and on top of rose fungal issues, I had to remove and give away a number of bigger roses to friends. I have an autoimmune thing which limits my sunlight exposure, etc. so gardening is…interesting. I balked for several years but am now content with selecting plants carefully, growing what I have and enjoying the bountiful Bourbons and other big beauties in forum members’ gardens like yours. Someone should start a Spring 2023 Bourbon thread! :)

@oursteelers 8B PNW and @Sheila z8a Rogue Valley OR, thank you for the photos of your VdBs! If that's what I've got here, I hope it will ultimately look as lovely as yours! Right now it's at a crazy awkward stage with new growth sticking out - maybe it will be more graceful next year :-)

@portlandmysteryrose, among my Bourbons are SldM, Louise Odier, Reine Victoria, ZD, Mme Ernest Calvat - I thought I loved them the most among OGRs, but except for SdlM (which I'm absolutely crazy about!), I really don't. What I'm falling in love with this spring are Albas - I might admit to spending half the day with my nose inside Mme Plantier! I've been trying to make sure I grow (or try to grow) roses from as many classes of OGRs as I can.

Avoiding sunlight sounds so challenging, I'm sorry to hear that. Much of my garden is shady (mature trees) so I have a lot of hybrid musks and ramblers.

Oh Madame Plantier is my favorite rose! She might not be one I recommend to everyone because she is a once bloomer but she holds the key to my heart!

@oursteelers 8B PNW she's magnificent! The one-time bloomers are my favorites, they save up all their energy for one big show each year, and it's worth it!!

I absolutely love Albas, too! During my big rose giveaway, I passed along my lovely Madame Plantier to a friend…or I thought I did. Somehow, a piece of her rooted in a crack in my driveway! Now, I feel inclined to extract her if I can and keep her somehow. What a survivor!
