Going Old School

So, I am going old school with my new bathroom…

I am just teasing. One of the issues with renewable energy is you get tasked with providing the public with recreational areas. This week we had to build an outhouse for a maintained campground we have.

It came out good but was grossly over budget at about $2000 to build this thing NOT counting labor hours. We got about halfway into it and figured ” we are into it this deep” so we just kept going on the cash outlay. I am pretty sure they will never have two electricians build the company a privy again.

I am not sure how many times it will be used either, as its going way out in the middle of nowhere, but its engineered for a family of five to use for 5 years straight.

Well, think of it as an investment in cross training.

For others with similar projects, if you have a local trade school that teaches carpentry or if high school shop still exists in your neck of the woods, you might approach the instructor and see if they're willing to tackle the project in their class with you supplying materials. If they have a pre-engineering/design/drafting curriculum, they might be willing to take on the design, too. Just be open to a solar cell powered privy which can talk to you and your refrigerator. It's tough to get "old school" from "new school" kids.

Notwithstanding it was built by two electricians (I think I see a handy light switch at the front door), I'm curious where most of the cost was. I assume there was some kind of underground excavation and perhaps an underground container put in the hole....where we once would have just had a hole and dumped a bit of lime in there now and then. I don't know what the modern old school outhouse specs look like.

BTW, I'm pretty sure you are supposed to cut a moon-shaped motif in the door :>)

Yeah most of the cost was in tools. Nail guns for framing, for roofing nails, finish nailing and staples. kind of overkill to but four nail guns for one privy, but you cannot expect electricians to pound nails by hand!!

On another note, the Milwuakke cordless nail guns are a dream to use. We test fired a few out over the head pond and they will launch a 16 penny 350 feet out.
