The Spanish-style lantern is a companion to the Spanish-inspired front door. Houses are not designed in a cultural vacuum, and often combine multiple influences of the period. This house just as likely, or more likely had Spanish Mediterranean furniture inside than it did contemporary furniture.

There are better choices out there. Your door is amazing and shouldn’t be paired with something as ornate as what you inherited. Beverly gave you a couple of ideas to simplify the fixture so the door gets all the attention.

Definitely change out to one one of Beverly's ideas. When you do, take the fixture to a local Habitat or similar recycle place. Someone out there is looking for it for a Spanish style home that was probably remuddled at some point with a fixture that would be perfect for you!

The one you have needs to go I aslo mentioned in your other post that the railing needs to be at least have the gate system removed and IMO the rest painted black so a blck light fixture in a simple MCM style would be great .I aslo would suggest that you do not keep adding posts regarding this home exterior just one post per space .

I am not saying you should be married to that particular light fixture.

But note the light fixtures in this Cliff May house and another Los Angeles glass box, published in Architectural Digest in 1964 and 1965. And look at the other furnishings, too. Not every contemporary post war house (they weren't called midcentury modern yet) was only lit by aluminum cylinders and furnished with Eames plywood storage units. In fact most of them probably were not. There is this made up 21st century set of rules about what these houses actually looked like and it just isn't true. So get rid of it if you want, but just understand that the most "authentic" stuff your house has is the stuff it came with, whether it is "appropriate" or not.

Palimpsest, thanks for finding the Cliff May photos. The historical context makes sense. Many choices were available in the mid 1960's and 1970's.

personally I like the light, I could see doing a white globe if that is the look you want.
