We Have a New Fur Kid!

last modified: 3 years ago

Well, after having lost 3 pups in 5 months, two to old age and our one foster to his forever home, we adopted a new boy just the other day. And, as we promised ourselves, only from a rescue group. Meet our Kip, a 6 y/o Corgi mix. He is the sweetest, most mellow boy and such a cuddler. In just these few short days, we know without a doubt that he's ours forever.

Kip is from a local rescue group. His former owner let him roam freely (a big no-no out here!) and fed him only table food. Sadly, he became overweight and then while roaming one day he was attacked by a coyote. Thankfully, he's been recovering very well with a wonderful foster couple these past 4 months. His wounds have healed and he's on a good, healthful diet to lose that extra weight.

Right after his adoption papers were signed, we headed out to a pet "supermart" where he helped us find him two beds (one for the bedroom and one for our family room), a collar, harness, leash and 4 of his very own toys.

He's already become attached to us all here, getting lots of hugs, kisses, and cuddles. Kip has found his forever home here with us, and we have a new forever-kid!

Okay, insert a very embarrassed face here. I initially wrote his name down here as "Kit". It was our first thought to name him that, but we finally all agreed on "KIP" instead. I just went back and changed it in my original post. Again, sorry! But here's a pic I snapped right after we got back from the store with his new everything. We put his family room bed down, along with his new toys. He immediately walked over, picked up a stuffy, took it over to his new bed and made himself comfy. Sweet boy!

He's a cutie, and the demeanor seems great. A woman just a couple of blocks from here has corgis, I think 4 (!). We hadn't lived here long when I returned from an errand and a friend here with DH said, whose dog followed you in the driveway. I hadn't seen a dog. I opened the garage door again and there patiently waiting to be let in was a corgi. It went into my kitchen, asked for water and I obliged ;) No collar, no tag but another neighbor said she had seen that breed not far up the street and guessed it came from there. I opened the door to DH's truck thinking it would need to be picked up (a presto log with feet :)) and it surprised me by jumping right in. Very athletic considering those short little legs. We found his Mom and Dad who were embarrassed he had invited himself over, hadn't yet noticed he was gone.

It's hard to imagine your home without a pet. I'm glad that space is taken and wish you many years of fun and love.

I am happy to read that so many on here are adopting rescues and yes the middle aged ones are often a bit harder to place so you 've done good!

I am developing a thing for Corgis so I most definitely approve. Please keep us updated with pix. That one of him on "one of" his beds with the stuffie!!!!!

An update on our newest furkid. We adopted Kip, a Corgi mix, from a local rescue group about 2 months ago. Two months later and we are crazy in love with him. Our vet put him on a better diet, as he'd developed heart problems before he came to us, and he's already lost 7 1/2 of the ten pounds he needed to lose! His life now (after almost six years of loneliness, pain and fear), is filled daily with love, kindness, kisses, hugs, happy walks, exercise, toys and healthful food. DH and I are retired and DD works from home so, believe me, Kip is never lonely! In the past, I was always hesitant to adopt an older dog, but not anymore. Kip is a true blessing!

*And, he also has a great ointment for his dry, chapped nose which we now use several times a day (LOL). Did I mention how much I love this sweet little guy?

i can't LOVE this enough!! lynn, your words just ooze love and kindness and i'm so happy you and kip found each other. 💗💗💗

one of my past rescue danes that i adopted at the ripe old age of 8 years developed a leaky aortic valve when she turned 10. we saw a cardiologist for regular checkups every 6 months. her meds were tweaked over the next 4 years and she did so well, you would never have known she had a problem. sadly, it was arthritis that became unmanageable when she was about to turn 14 (almost unheard of in danes) that took her.
