We just moved into our new old house. We are working on fixing all of the mistakes that the previous owner did in an attempt to make the house look nicer to sell. One of these things was the front door. It looks like they tried to stain it or paint it but were unsuccessful, and it is peeling (we knew this during the purchase but we had bigger things we needed them to fix).

As far as I can tell, the door is fiberglass, but not 100% sure. I am wondering if anyone here has any clue what sort of product was applied that would peel in this way? It hasn't been here for months and started to peel. It did this right after they applied it. I thought I remembered them saying something about staining the door, but can you even stain fiberglas doors? In any case, any advice on how to remedy short of replacing the front door would be very appreciated.
