Which are which? You need to have them lay the GAF out the same as the Certainteed.

As far as warranty personally I do not see many roofing companies every actually have to back up their warranty, either thru product failures (prorated for a reason) or installation (most every failure is install related and most will not be covered). My question would be why Certainteed needs to have the better warranty? They are the only I am aware of with that warranty and that warranty may have come about to combat the poor reputation they had years ago from product failures.

^Agree with kandrewspa. The variegation is too busy with the brick, at least as it appears in the photo.

It seems like all shingles are now varigated? Are there any that are not?

Kelly, that’s a good question. I’m guessing there definitely are more uniform colored shingles available. Our daughter and son-in-law just had a new roof installed and it’s pretty uniform. A couple new roofs in our neighborhood also look more uniform. It’s really personal preference since some people like shingles that look more textured with the variegation. It just seems some brick can have quite a bit of variegation on its own. Again, personal choice, but I’d be cautious adding even more pattern on the roof.

No that’s def been my concern but everything we’ve been shown is very variegated. This is why I actually went out and bought bundles of shingles and construction adhesive and put my own samples together to put on the roof. 😂. I see a lot of black that’s one color but k think black is too heavy for our roof and too hot in Houston. It was supposed to be installed this week and I just can’t decide on color/brand bc it all just seems so variegated.

I agree with those who suggest LESS variation in the shingles. Maybe a soft, uniform brown?

Definitely no black…too harsh/severe and too hot. I was just talking to my husband and we both think there must be more uniform shingles available. We’re in Southern CA so I don’t know about Houston. I can really understand your frustration. Let’s see if one of the pros here can help with that. Now I’m curious, too.

I agree, its way too variegated to look good with your brick. Also those are architectual shingles, and have a lot of pattern. A standard solid charcoal color would be a much better option for your house. Yes, you can still get them. I had them put on my house in 2020, because the variegated looked bad with my stone, and last August, I had them put on my workshop. You just have to ask, for standard shingles, which is what you have on there now. Standard refers to pattern, not quality.

Good to hear, cat_ky. There’s got to be choices available. I agree a gray/charcoal could be nice.

cat_ky does every brand carry standard shingles? They are pushing certainteed or GAF and i don't see standarf shingles on their websites.

Its same as what is on your house at the present time. There are many colors to pick from. Put them by your brick, and see which color goes the best. I suggested charcoal, because, it goes with just about anything, but, browns would look good too.

Have you looked at Certainteed Black Walnut shingles? They are a dark, uniform brown color that I think would look better on your house than the two options you have been given.

Your home currently has architectural shingles installed--not 3-tabs--which are a lower cost shingle that doesn't look nearly as nice.

I did a lot of investigation of manufacturers' shingle warranties years ago when we were constructing conditioned attics with spray foam insulation on the underside of the roof sheathing. I came to the same conclusion as Millworkman--nobody is likely to ever collect on a shingle warranty.

We currently have architectural shingles, not three tab.

@charles Ross homes contractor is certified w certainteed so pushing that more. But he said he can do the GAF (I prefer the color) - would you have any other reservations about him installing the GAF?

I consider 30-yr architectural shingles to be a commodity; I don't see much difference in quality or price from one manufacturer to another. Roofers may push one over the other because they get volume price discounts or rebates.

Both good shingles. Go with what you like better color wise.

Curious what you ended up choosing. Our house is similar with brick front, green cedar shakes for siding, and cream trim. The roof is very prominent and I am worried about the variations in the shingles. We were looking at the same ones as you, plus the Mission Brown color by Timberline which has less variation in it.

Which did you choose? I am having all the same challenges as you because our house is brown with white trim and part of front siding is brick in different colors.
