thsnk you that makes me feel better. Also concerened that fumes from furnace may not be exiting house as efficiantly if liner isnt 100%? or that the masonary will be affected? or are we good unless we decide to burn?

If furnace vents thru chimney, you must insure that the furnace flue is not in need of repair.

Have a furnance man check it out. Its not a guessing game, of maybe it is, and maybe it isnt.

A woodburning fireplace flue should be dedicated to the fireplace alone. Any furnaces and water heaters venting through the chimney should vent through a separate flue. Provided that's indeed the case, I suggest you properly decommission the fireplace by insulating and sealing the top of the firebox. You'll waste less energy and you'll prevent back drafting of the fireplace. I'd also cap the flue to keep critters out.
